Continuous School Improvement Plan: DELALIO ELEMENTARY SY 2014-2015
Goal: By June 2015, all students at DeLalio will improve math problem solving skills across the curriculum using the four-step
problem solving (Read, Plan, Solve, and Look Back). Progress will be measured by an increase of 5% in every grade level
through the use of system-wide and local assessments. Proficiency = 75%.

Local Assessments:

Research:
Current research reveals a student’s literacy development depends upon the interconnection
between reading and writing. Writing development parallels reading development. Reading
and writing share elements of a common knowledge as well as an overlapping cognitive
processing. Writing enhances a student’s vocabulary, comprehension, and spelling skills.
Students become better writers by strengthening their reading skills and vice-versa

Intervention 2:
All students will learn and use graphic
organizers to improve reading comprehension.
Research:
A graphic organizer is a strategy used to improve reading comprehension skills and organize thoughts.
They provide visual images to help students organize and process text. Graphic organizers actively engage
and involve students as they make meaning from text. According to the National Reading Panel, analyses
of 203 studies on text comprehension offered eight strategies which had a “firm scientific basis for
concluding that they improve comprehension.” Using graphic organizers to improve reading
comprehension was cited as one of the eight strategies.

Intervention 3 :
All students will meet 2 – 3 times a week in small group reading instruction and
discussion.
Research:
One of the most critical components of a comprehensive literacy program is
Small-Group Reading Instruction (SGRI) (Scholastic, 2014). Students gain an
advantage by interacting with students who have similar needs and are on a
similar text level. SGRI allows teachers to target specific skills and scaffold
instruction by combining guided reading and word study in small groups
(Kosanovich, et. al., 2006). SGRI directly correlates to our school goal of
improving reading comprehension by allowing students to think about themes
in books and question the text (Scholastic, 2014).
