How does it help patients?
In 1992 the Kentucky Circuit Court Clerks
Association successfully
promoted legislation in the
Kentucky General Assembly that allowed the state’s
drivers’ license clerks to
request a $1.00 donation
from everyone renewing their license. The
money is used to promote organ and tissue
donation within the state.
The Trust For Life was formed shortly afterwards and since then, has collected over $7
million to promote organ donation. It has
spent the money on newspaper, radio and
television advertising, billboards, brochures,
posters and many other items to encourage
people to consider organ and tissue donation.
The Trust and Kentucky’s Circuit Court
Clerks are also strong supporters of the Kentucky Organ Donor Registry. More than 98%
of the names placed on the registry have
come from the Circuit Clerks’ drivers license

The KY Circuit Court Clerks’ Trust For
Life Satterwhite Recipient Assistance Fund,
which this event funds, assists Kentucky
transplant patients and their families in need.
Since 2001, more than 370 Kentuckians who
have undergone life-saving transplants have
been helped with money raised at events like
this outing.
Health insurance, Medicaid, Medicare and
personal savings sometimes are not enough to
insure that a patient and a patient’s family
have enough resources to insure a complete
and successful recovery.
The Satterwhite Fund is designed to help
when there are needs that are not caught in
the usual “safety nets” of our society.
Judge Charles Satterwhite
Owen County’s Circuit Court Judge,
Charles Satterwhite, was one of the state’s
most respected jurists. Diagnosed with cystic
fibrosis during his youth, he built a stellar
career in the law, becoming Kentucky’s
youngest Circuit Court Judge ever.
He was a double-lung transplant recipient
and a member of the Trust For Life’s Board
of Directors until his death in 1998.
