(thelargestareaofsanddunesinWales),aremotebeach,asandspit(withbigopenwiews
alongtheMenaiStraightstoSnowdoniaandtheLlwynPeninsular),saltmarshes,aPineForest,
LlanddwynIsland(withitslighthouse)andMaltraethSands.
ThiswalkwouldmakeagoodalternativewalkifyouhavecometoNorthWalestovisit
Snowdonia,butthereispoorweatherorlowcloudoverthetops,butitisalovelywalkinits
ownright.Itissuitableforchildren.
Thereare2options,acircularwalk(publictransportfriendly),andforcardrivers,2short
coastalwalksstartingfromabeachcarpark.
ThecircularwalksstartsinNewboroughvillage(pub,busfromBangor).Itcrosses
grassland,thensanddunestoreachthecoast.AtlowtidecrossthesandstoMenai
Point,orcircleinland,alongthedunesaroundasaltmarsh.MenaiPointistheendofa
sandspitattheentrancetotheMenaiStraightsbetweenAngleseyandthemainland.
ThesecondlegofthewalkisaroundthepointandaroundLlanddwynBay-along,sandy
beachbeachbackedbysanddunes-toLlanddwynIsland.Halfwayaroundthebay,
behindthedunesisacarparkusedbytheshortwalks.LlanddwynIsland,atthefarend
ofthebay,isonlyafewmetresoffshore,along,narrowpeninisularconnectedto
Anglseybysand.Afterwalkingouttothetower/lighthouseatendandback,continue
pasttheislandtoMaltraethSands-morebeachwalking,orifyouprefer,thepineforest
behindit.Finaly,ashortwalkinlandreturnsyoutoNewboroughvillage.Bustravellers
cancontinueontothecob(acauseway)thatleadstoMaltraethvillage(pub,busto
Bangor).
Theshortwalksarei)alongthebeachorsanddunesin1directiontoMenaiPoint,andii)
alongthebeachintheotherdirectiontotheisland.
TraintravellerscanstartfromBordorganStation,walktoMaltraethandcrossthecobtostart
thecircularwalk,thenreturnthesameway,butwhilepleasent,thiswouldmakequitealong
walk.
Dogaren'tallowedonthestretchofbeachfromthecar-parktotheislandinthesummer(May
toSeptember)-butthereisaforestpathbehindthebeachyoucoulduse
MaltraethSandsarealsousedbynaturists,andthesaltmarshnorthofthespittoAbermenai
Pointisalsousedbymigratedbirds.
