Goal: Students will learn about reflection symmetry and locate lines of symmetry in letters of the alphabet
Crafting:
 Place a copy of the Alphabet page (included below) under the document camera or on overhead.
 Ask students “Is there a line of symmetry in the letter A?” Model with the letter A where the line of
symmetry is. “Are there any other lines of symmetry in A?”
 Record the letter A on the Alphabet Symmetry Chart (included below) in the column “One line of symmetry”
Composing:
 Instruct students to work with a partner and go through the rest of the letters on the sheet drawing all the
lines of symmetry they can find for each letter and then recording that letter on the chart.
 Use a Kagan structure like Rally Coach or Sage-n-Scribe.
Reflecting:

Discuss each letter and have students show where the lines of symmetry are for each one.

Students may not notice that the letter O is not an exact circle. It has only two lines of reflective symmetry.

 Look for lines of symmetry that show reflection. Draw the lines of symmetry on each
letter.
