Safety Management and culture: the need for a new approach
Lindsay LeCompte, Executive Director, Australian Constructors Association

Construction Safety
Showcase
Safety is a highly valued outcome and something positive. However, safety has become associated with the opposite:
incidents, injuries and illnesses. Safety could (and should) be about creating better workplaces. Daniel will give a
presentation that challenges mainstream ideas around safety and outline ways for organisations to start working on the
positive side of safety.
‘Creating safer workplaces through
the positive side of safety’
He will address the roles and related skills needed by all of those involved in safety from the boardroom to the worksite,
safety in design, the introduction of lead indicators and new technologies being rolled out for use by all workers.

Building a healthy workplace - Lendlease’s wellbeing journey

In response, Lendlease launched a new framework to guide the business on their health and wellbeing mission in late
2014. Since its launch in October 2014, Lendlease’s approach to health and wellbeing has been paying dividends. The

Operations Manager,
Shamrock Civil
Clinton is a construction industry professional with over 40 years’ experience managing and leading significant
projects throughout Queensland.
Joe Warnick has held the role of Safety Advisor at Condev Construction for 18 months. Joe’s journey to be a safety
advisor is quite unique - he wasn’t looking to be a safety advisor, the role found him.
Starting his career as an apprentice Diesel Fitter for Main Roads in Rockhampton, Clinton’s aptitude and
uncanny ability to lead others saw him move into General Manager for RoadTek Queensland in 2009. This role
saw him accountable for over 2,750 employees and the management of approximately 75 civil construction
and rehabilitation projects on a daily basis amounting to an annual turnover of $1 billion.
While working as a labourer, Joe’s work ethic, problem-solving, great safety awareness and ability to think outside
the square was noticed. As the company grew there was a need to expand the safety team and Condev committed
to developing someone internally who was passionate about their work, was trusted and had the right values.
Clinton’s current role as Operations Manager at Shamrock Civil involves providing direction, strategic
development and implementing operational performance measures for a diverse array of projects in the road,
rail, bridge and airport infrastructure sectors. Clinton is committed to the continuity and improvement of the
health and safety of Shamrock Civil’s workforce, which has the potential to deliver meaningful productivity
benefits and safety improvement initiatives for the industry.
Joe has since put his mark on the way that he does safety. It is not conventional but he has seen a great
movement in the way that safety is a priority from management to the workers on site.
