8.7 Classifying Quadrilaterals
Learn to name and identify, and draw types
of quadrilaterals.
Vocabulary
parallelogram
rectangle
rhombus
square
trapezoid
Some quadrilaterals have properties
that classify them as special quadrilaterals.
Here are five major special quadrilaterals.

A parallelogram has both pairs of opposite
sides parallel and congruent. Both pairs of
opposite angles are congruent.
A rhombus has four congruent sides.

February 26, 2014
A rectangle has four right angles.
A square has four congruent sides
and four right angles.

February 26, 2014
A trapezoid has exactly one pair
of parallel sides.
Quadrilaterals can have more than one
name because the special quadrilaterals
sometimes share properties.

Additional Example 1A: Classifying Quadrilaterals
Give all the names that apply to the quadrilateral.
Then give the name that best describes it.

Additional Example 2A: Drawing Quadrilaterals
Draw each figure. If it is not possible to draw explain why.
a rectangle that is not a square.
The figure has opposite sides parallel
and four right angles
but does not have four congruent sides.
a rhombus that is not a square.
The figure has four congruent sides
but no right angles.

Additional Example 2B: Drawing Quadrilaterals
Draw each figure. If it is not possible to draw explain why.
a square that is not a rhombus.
Not possible; all squares are
rhombi because they have 4
congruent sides.
a trapezoid that is a rectangle.
Not possible;
A rectangle has four right angles
and a
trapezoid does not.
