Naval History for MARCH
14 MAR 1863 - A squadron of ships led by Rear Adm. David G. Farragut passes the heavy batteries at Port Hudson, La., to
establish a blockade of Red River supply lines during the Civil War.
14 MAR 1945 - During the Battle for Iwo Jima, Marine (Pvt. George Phillips and Pvt. Franklin E. Sigler) each perform acts
of "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life." Both are awarded Medals of Honors, Phillips receives his
posthumously.
19 MAR 1917 - Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels authorized the enlistment of women to help alleviate a projected
shortage of clerical workers.
25 MAR 1945 - After 35 days of bitter fighting, the amphibious assault on the rocky fortress of Iwo Jima finally appeared
over. On the night of 25 March, however, a 300-man Japanese force launched a vicious final counterattack in the vicinity
of Airfield Number 2. Army pilots, Seabees and Marines of the 5th Pioneer Battalion and 28th Marines fought the
fanatical Japanese force till morning but suffered heavy casualties --more than l00 killed and another 200 American
wounded. Nearly all of the Japanese force was killed in the battle.
31 MAR 1992 - USS Missouri (BB-63), the last active American battleship, is decommissioned. Commissioned in June
1944, she served during World War II, notably for the location of the official Japanese surrender on Sept. 2, 1945. Today,
the "Mighty Mo" is open for visitors in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as the Battleship Missouri Memorial, under the care of the
USS Missouri Memorial Association, Inc.
