AR beat Lawsohtun to lift trophy
By Our Reporter
SHILLONG: The Assam
Rifles Laitkor team proved
to be too strong for Lawsohtun SC in the final of the
Assam Rifles Invitational
Football Cup, winning the
coveted title by a convincing 4-0 margin at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here
on Tuesday.
Lawsohtun, who also finished as runners-up in last
year’s tournament, had numerous moments where
they shone on the pitch, but
goals at regular intervals by
the jawans ensured that
they were almost always on
the back foot.
By dint of this victory
Assam Rifles Laitkor were
awarded a trophy and
cheque for Rs 2 lakh, but, in
a magnanimous gesture, the
force’s team decided to
share the prize money with
the other 19 clubs that took
part in the competition.
A fine example of good
passing early on in the
game allowed Mowia to
seize the lead for the Riflemen with a high shot into
the net in the fourth minute,
but Lawsohtun kept up the
pressure in the hunt for the
equaliser, with Assam Rifles’
goalkeeper Chandra Singh
forced to make two sharp
saves in the 16th and 21st minutes to keep his side ahead.
After a fine save of his
own on the half hour, Law-

at Indian Wells
INDIAN WELLS (CALIFORNIA): Switzerland’s
Stan Wawrinka defeated
Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-5, 6-3 to advance to
the round of 16 at the BNP
Paribas Open here.
Wawrinka will now take
on Yoshihito Nishioka of
Japan, who upset the Czech
Republic's Tomas Berdych
1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, reports Efe.
‘It was a really good
match. I'm very happy ... I
was serving well. I think I'm
moving better and better,
and it's all positive so far,’
Wawrinka said on Monday.
‘I know how he's playing
- more from the baseline,
using his power. It's going
to be interesting. I never
practice with him, so it's going to be the first time we're
going to be against each
other. So I'm sure it's going
to be a good match," he
added. In other men's ac-
tion, Austria's Dominic
Thiem defeated Germany's
Misha Zverev 6-1, 6-4, while
France's Gael Monfils took
out American John Isner 62, 6-4. In women's category,
American Madison Keys
rolled over Japan's Naomi
Osaka 6-1, 6-4 in 57 minutes.
‘I’m just happy to be out
here, happy to have another
win, happy to get to play on
Wednesday," Keys said.

sohtun goalie Banshanlang
Sten collided with an opposition player in the box towards the end of the first
half, leading to a penalty
kick. Golden Boot award
winner Mani Chetry (who
finished with a total of nine
goals) stepped up and converted and the jawans went
into the half time break leading 2-0.
The large crowd of spectators had an entertaining
interval with a stirring performance by 60 members of
an Assam Rifles mass band,
which was appreciated by
one and all. That performance was soon followed by
another 45 minutes of action
on the pitch where Lawsohtun had a chance to get
back into the game soon after the restart via a free-kick,
though the aim was a little
off. The game was finally
taken away from the Lawso-
htun team just before an
hour’s play when Thring
Bhutia scored from close
range, with Mowia getting
his brace in the 84th minute
with a delightful left-footer.
Despite these setbacks,
never for once did it look like
Lawsohtun stopped trying
and they valiantly battled
until the final whistle, no
doubt boosted by the redoubtable efforts of the experienced Milancy Khongs-
tia, Shongdor Kharbuli and
Joy Mrong Kharraswai
among others. For his fine
efforts over the length of
the competition, Khongstia
was named Best Player. Despite four goals getting past
him, Sten was never really
at fault for conceding the
goals today and his previous fine efforts under the
bar was recognised in his
Best Goalkeeper award at the
presentation ceremony.

Chandigarh beat M’laya, Services lose
Santosh Trophy
VASCO: Chandigarh rallied
to beat Meghalaya 2-1 in a
Group A league match of the
71st Santosh Trophy football tournament at Tilak Stadium here on Tuesday.
After Meghalaya’s Kitboklang Pale had put his
team ahead in the 51st
minute, Chandigarh fought
back to restore parity in the
64th minute. Captain Sehijpal Singh scored the winner in the injury to give
Chandigarh full points.
With Tueday’s win,
Chandigarh opened their account with three points from
two matches. Meghalaya
are yet still to open their account from two matches.
Meghalaya, who played
with swift short passes, had
the first chance to surge
ahead in 10th minute when
Enestar Malagiang relayed
the ball to Kitboklang Pale
who shot straight to keeper
Harpritpal Singh.
Punjab, who relied more
on the long balls to break
the rival defence, had the
best chance to take the lead
in the 19th minute when Arshdeep Singh sent a cross
into the box for Akash Sangwan whose left footer was
put out by rival keeper.
After the change of
ends, Meghalaya took the
lead in the 51st minute when
Fullmoon Mukhim relayed
the ball to Andy Zakharay
who laid a pass for Kitboklang Pale to send a low left
footer at the back of the net.
Punjab retaliated and
equalised in the 64th
minute. A thrown-in from the
right by Haarpeet Bedi into
the box saw Jarmanjit Singh
headed the ball to Gagandeep Singh who shot home
from close.
Two minutes later, substitute Abhishek Sharma
was unlucky not to have
put Chandigarh in the lead
as his shot hit the post.
Thereafter, Meghalaya
did most of the attacking
but Chandigarh scored the
winner in the injury time
through captain Sehijpal
Singh whose stiff grounder
beat Meghalaya keeper
Kenio all ends up.
In another match, West
Bengal earned a hardfought 1-0 win over defending champions Services to
move atop Group A at Bambolim Sports Complex.
Bengal scored the winner
through Moirangthem Basanta Singh in the 22nd
minute. He collected the ball
on rebound from Services
defender N Herojith Singh
and unleashed a brilliant
curler from an angle leaving
the goalkeeper beaten all
ends up. The match failed
to reach any heights as midfield possession dominated
proceedings and both teams
of. This is a very important
series. It's 1-1. Both teams
will come hard in this game.
I'm sure cricket will be the
winner." The DRS controversy surrounding Steve
Smith's dismissal threatened
to overshadow India's fightback, eventually prompting
BCCI and Cricket Australia
to issue a joint statement to
bring the matter to an end.
"As custodians of this
great game, we believe it's
important that we look after
the game. Key stakeholders
are the players and they certainly understand their responsibility," the former India captain told reporters.
Kumble lauded the BCCI
for taking a "matured call"
and bring the focus back to
cricket.
"I think what was important was to focus back on
the game. I am very glad the
BCCI took a very matured
call with Cricket Australia
and issued a joint statement
that cricket needs to move
on and moved out from
whatever happened in Bangalore. ‘That I think is important because focus has
to be on the game. I thought
we made a really fantastic
comeback after losing the
first Test. It was very rewarding,’ he said.
Asked if Smith and Virat
Kohli would meet before the
town's maiden Test, Kumble
responded in positive.
‘Yes they will meet.’
Kumble said the team
was not affected by the
talks around DRS and
pitches used in the two
Test. ‘It doesn’t affect our
game. We only want to play.
We are not doing the talking but you are. We are just
playing and thinking about
the game on the field,’ the
coach said. (PTI)

HNLC vows to Bodo rebels supplying
punish rapists arms to William’s outfit
Says will revive Operation Kyllang
By Our Reporter
SHILLONG: At a time
when police have seen little success in curbing
crime against women in the
State and punishing sexual predators, militant group
Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC)
has said it would revive its
Operation Kyllang to punish rapists.
The banned outfit's
publicity secretary, Sainkupar Nongtraw, said revival of Operation Kyllang,
which was practised by the
group in the late nineties
and early 2000s, would not
be possible without the cooperation of people.
Nongtraw said HNLC
would not spare rapists
who "attack children" and
the punishment would be
capital in nature.
Under Operation Kyllang, HNLC used to punish men accused of sexual
crimes by piercing their
ears and putting locks into
the holes as an identifying
mark.
The outfit said law and
order ensuring safety of
women in the State is deteriorating by the day and
culprits get away by committing crimes.
There has been a constant clamour for special
courts and high rate of
conviction to deter sexual
predators from attacking
women and children. The
government has assured
that it is in the process to
restart fast track courts in
all districts.
Criticising Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, the
outfit said despite his talks
about ensuring women's
safety, he has failed to
check on his Home minister whose guest house
was used for flesh trade.
HNLC also alleged that
Meghalaya Houses in
Delhi and Kolkata have become "recreational ladies'
clubs" for several MLAs.

However, the UDP leader said since

be with the BJP-led NDA.
"We are sticking to that and it was reiterated in Guwahati meetings. However, given the current situation, we feel that UDP

Govt pursuing

By Our Reporter
SHILLONG: Chief Minister

Tuesday the State government is pursuing exemption

"We are seeking exemption and the issue has already been taken up. We are

Sangma's statement was

By Our Reporter
SHILLONG: Congress legislator P.N Syiem wanted the
State government to adopt
a policy to tide over the

release of Central share of
money for the scholarships
of students in the State.
During the question hour
in the Assembly on Tuesday, in reply to a question
by UDP's Jemino Mawthoh,
Higher and Technical Education Minister Roshan
Warjri said the change of
funding pattern by the Centre from 100 per cent to 90:10
has resulted in the delay in
clearing pending scholarships.
However, raising a question, Syiem wanted to know
whether the State government has any intention to
supplement the required
amount.
He said the State government should have a policy
to supplement the Centre's
scholarship initiative.
"The State has so many
resources and when students face crisis, the government should come up
with a policy to supplement
the initiative of the Centre
so that students do not suffer. We are depending too

added.
