IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa is the biggest triathlon in Africa with a sellout field annually. The event incorporates the breathtaking scenes of the
Wild Coast transitioning effortlessly into the true Eastern Cape countryside. The race also marks the dtart of the 2014 season for IRONMAN
Europe, Middle East & Africa.
SWIM
The wave start swim gets underway from East London’s Orient Beach with athletes heading out into the Indian
Ocean. A single loop swim, athletes swim adjacent to the East London’s harbour. Protected by the breakwaters of
the harbour, athletes can expect generally calm and warm waters.

BIKE
The bike course is one of the most prominent features of the race. Athletes head out along the beach front on the
East London esplanade before moving onto the North East Expressway and the N2 highway. A national highway is
completely shut down offering full road closure. Faced with rolling hills and a gradual climb until the 45 kilometre
turnaround point, athletes set back along the highway towards back towards the city.

The two-loop run course takes athletes along the pier and around the lighthouse before setting out along the East
London esplanade. The course then veers slightly away from the coast to Bunker’s Hill after which the course becomes relatively flat until the turnaround point before heading back towards the esplanade where athletes enjoy the
fantastic crowd support.

What makes IRONMAN South Africa special is the amazing crowd support by the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay. The city and its people have
truly taken ownership of the event, shouting words of encouragement to
the athletes from swim start until midnight. Spectators set up gazebos
days before the event and camp out.
SWIM
The swim begins at Hobie Beach where athletes head into the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and includes two
loops. Athletes head out parallel to Shark Rock Pier before turning left towards the harbour. They will return to the
spectator-laden beach to complete the first loop before heading back into the surf.

BIKE
The bike course starts out along the coast towards the city. Athletes will then climb for 10 kilometers to reach the
highest point of 183 meters above sea level. Gentle rolling hills occur to the turn-around point at the 34 kilometer
mark, and then at the 40 kilometer mark it’s downhill to the coast. Athletes get to take in the magnificent sea-scape
before soaking up the crowd’s energy as they go past transition along Marine Drive.

Known as a tourism destination and athlete-favorite alike Mallorca and
the IRONMAN 70.3 have become the seaso-starter for many athletes
from all over the world. Called “European Kona” due to its beautiful beaches and ocean swim the race offers a challenging bike course and a fantastic finish line directly located on the beach.

The swim course is located in the harbour area of the city of Alcudia. Starting on the beach athletes have to swim
800m straight before reaching the two turning buoys and swim straight back to the swim exit, just 200m located
from where they started.

Provence is also host to the amazing IRONMAN 70.3 Aix en Provence
where athletes ride their bikes through small villages typical for Southern
France. The four-loop bike course runs through the city center where
thousands of fans cheer on the athletes as they make their way to the
finish line.

The one-loop swim takes place at the lake of Payrolls en Provence which is located about 20km from Aix en Provence.
Shuttles are provided for the athlete the morning of the race. The race holds a wave start swim, athletes are being
identified with colored swim caps.

70.3 St. Pölten has gained the reputation of being an extremely “fast”
course among athletes. A sentiment that is underlined by the fact that
athletes ride part of the run course on a shut-off highway. The finish line is
remarkable as well as athletes run down the magic carpet in St. Pöltens
tennis stadium.

The swim course is quite unique in the world of IRONMAN races as it covers two lakes – Viehofner See and Ratzersdorfer See – separated by a running passage of 200m. The run from one lake to the other draws thousands of fans
who are able to get up, close and personal with the athletes.

Situated in Exmoor National Park it provides a stunning backdrop for an
event. The remote location offers real get-away-from-it-all weekend where

Wimbleball Lake was created as a man-made reservoir nestled in the middle of the Exmoor National Park. The
course is a clockwise, one-loop circuit.

The bike course circles the event venue on two laps taking in stunning views across the National Park. A demanding
route tests the cyclist’s bike handling as well as their fitness with the big descent into Machine Cross a feature.

Exebridge which straddles the Devon border.

three times giving the course a challenging finale.

IRONMAN 70.3 Luxembourg is a true multinational triathlon. Swim in
Luxembourg and Germany, bike in Luxembourg and France and run along
the Mosel river in Luxembourg. A “must see” is the athletes’ garden – the
open air pool of Remich. It is located in middle of the event area and offers a 50 meter pool to warm-up on race morning and to cool- down after
the race.

Athletes swim in the Mosel river (marking the only river swim in Europe) which is the border of the Grand-Duchy of

bike course so special is its diversity between Mediterranean Sea and steep mountains.

A race that is unique in many ways but what really stands out are the
people of Haugesund waving flags, cheering on every single athlete. You
will instantly feel at home in Norway. The whole race are is within walking distance. Haugesund Airport is just a short drive from the city center
offering direct flights to Italy, Polen, London and Spain.

The swim takes place at the Skeisvatne lake a 15 minute walk from city center where spectators can cheer and
watch the action from all around the lake. Transition zone is located right near the swim exit.

The bike course is a 90 km one loop course. The course is rolling (and can be quite technical) and passes through

Frankfurt am Main has also been home to the IRONMAN European
Championship for many years. The finish line on one of the most famous

Athletes have to swim 2.1km before reaching an “Australian Exit” and go on the second loop for another 1.7km.

all over the world. While the atmosphere builds on the bike course and
into the run, where locals now turn out in great numbers to cheer the
athletes on.
SWIM
Hosted at Pennington Flash Country Park about 11 miles from Bolton centre, the lake is used year round for watersports and other activities. The course is two anti-clockwise laps. Pontoons are installed to ensure easy entry and
exit after the first lap to the cheers from the crowds before re-entering for the second lap.

BIKE
The bike course starts with a point to point cycle from Pennington Flash to Adlington, where athletes join a three lap
circuit. Almost immediately they are faced with the biggest climb on the course called Sheep House Lane. This road
is deceptively challenging, especially on the third lap, but the support on this gently rising hill makes it all worthwhile.
The three loops take in the Lancashire countryside, totalling 1600m of climbing.

The run course starts with a point to point run through Horwich before reaching Bolton town centre and joining a
three lap circuit of the town. While the majority of the run is on tarmac road, there is a section of canal pathway.
Chorley New Road is the out and back section of the loop, now famous for the thousands of supporters. As athletes
come into the town centre they are brought tantalisingly close to the finish line, before turning away for their next lap.

SWIM
Waldsee Raunheim is the venue for the swim portion of IRONMAN 70.3 European Championship. The lake is located
10km south-east of Downtown Wiesbaden. After the first lap there is a land section of 60 feet before entering the
water again for the final lap.

The bike course takes the athletes through the Taunus region and finishes after 90k in the Kurhaus Wiesbaden

BIKE
This two-loop bike course is considered to be one of the fastest in the world. Athletes get to cross the 6km Öland

moorland area which was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2000. You return to Färjestaden before you ride
back to Kalmar on the Öland Bridge.

in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park provides a stunning backdrop

course.

A beach start leads to a two lap triangular swim with an “Australian Exit” on the beach after the first lap. After completing the second lap, the cliffs provide an additional challenge for the athletes to climb the path to pass through

The course is gaining a reputation as one of the most demanding bike courses on the IRONMAN calendar. Not

transition in Tenby. The support on the course is second to none, with crowds gathering across Pembrokeshire
to cheer athletes on.
