Neutralizing acids

SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT
Neutralizing acids
Josh Williams| Mrs. Mcnees | Syracuse
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
• Which antacid works the best at neutralizing the acid?
RESEARCH
• Summarize your research here in three to five significant facts:
– Grape juice is a acid indicator
– Alginate antacids work by forming a barrier and preventing acid from rising
– The longer an antacid stays in your stomach the longer it works

HYPOTHESIS
• I think that if we test which antacid neutralizes the acid the best then
the one with the most active ingredient will be the most effective,
because the active ingredient is the part that causes the reaction.
PROCEDURE: MATERIALS
• Grape juice, Lemon juice (for the acid), test tubes (or other container),
various liquid antacids, medicine dropper.
PROCEDURE: STEPS
1. Put five ml of grape juice in each container(to serve as an
acid base indicator)
2. Put five ml of lemon juice in each container
3. Label each container with the name of the antacid
4. Add the antacid in controlled measures, record how much it
takes to neutralize the base
5. Repeat the process with each container and antacid washing
dropper in-between each antacid
VARIABLES
• Constants: amount the of lemon and grape juice
• Controlled variables: no antacid
• Independent (manipulated) variable: what antacid I used
• Dependent (measured) variable: the amount of antacid required to
neutralize the base
DATA/OBSERVATIONS
The table show the number of drops before a noticeable change occurred.
Pepto
Philip’s
Equate
Graviscon
Di-gel
Control
4 drops
9 drops
7 drops
15 drops
6 drops
No antacid added
Mixed in quickly
but did not react
immediately
Sat in drops at the Behaved similarly
bottom and
to the equate
dissolved in a way
rather than mix in
Pooled at the top
and mixed kind of
slowly
CONCLUSION
• According to my experiment the Pepto was most efficient because it
took the fewest drops before a noticeable change. This disproved my
hypothesis because it had less of the active ingredient. I was
surprised because I thought it would be less efficient because it treats
several things at once. As far as replicating this experiment a better
way of judging when the acid was neutralized would be very
important, I don’t think my data is as accurate as it could have been if
I had a better system.
