for more information.
McKinley Elementary students and their families are invited to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ Birthday and the National
Education Association’s 20th Annual Read Across America Day on March 1 with an open house breakfast
consisting of Dr. Seuss’ signature dish – green eggs and ham. The breakfast is provided free of charge for
McKinley students and families by the McKinley PTA and also includes milk and juice. (Sweet rolls are available
as an alternative if green eggs don’t tickle your fancy.) Fargo Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeff Schatz will
be in attendance to have breakfast with the McKinley students and families.
There will be a short musical performance by the McKinley first graders during breakfast, led by McKinley
music instructor Lisa Kornkven.
Following breakfast, guest readers from the community will visit classrooms beginning at 8:30 a.m. to read a
Dr. Seuss book to the students and talk about the importance of reading. Scheduled guest readers for this
year include: Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney; Fargo Police Chief David Todd; Fargo Police Officer Adam Gossen (a
former McKinley Elementary paraprofessional); Kerstin Kealy, Dana Mogck, and Dom Izzo from WDAY News;
Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney; former McKinley Elementary principals Dave Kahl and Dawn Streifel; and
several Fargo fire fighters from the north Fargo fire station.
The school has been holding this Dr. Seuss breakfast event for more than 19 years.
Read Across America Day is the National Education Association’s signature program, and is designed to build a
nation of readers. It is typically celebrated in conjunction with Dr. Seuss’ March 2 birthday. Events that
promote reading are encouraged for the entire school week, February 27 – March 3, 2017. More information
on this NEA program can be found at this link.
