Mariposa is definitely ready for some brisker weather and a well deserved Thanksgiving holiday! This is the time that teachers are busy preparing report cards and our primary classes shine with Autumn’s rich colors! The money raised by our PTA last year is purchasing equipment for 9 classrooms. In addition, we recently had some amazing news! The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians has provided Mariposa with a grant of $25,941.00 which will fund 6 more interactive classroom projectors!!! This is a dream come true for our school! In the summer, we wrote a grant through San Manuel’s Charitable Giving program in hopes that the Tribe might consider funding a classroom or two with this new technology. After reviewing Mariposa’s grant application, the Tribe sent out a program officer to visit Mariposa and discuss the grant. A few weeks later, we heard amazing news from the Charitable Giving office. We were receiving funds for 6 rooms!!! This is a huge blessing for our little school, for this grant amount is almost 2/3 of our normal school budget. We cannot thank the Tribe enough for their generosity. In addition, a huge “Thank You” goes out to the Calderon family for telling us about the Charitable Giving branch of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians! We are “over the moon” with excitement about the San Manuel donation! October’s Activities: Our Fall Festival was a great success! It was wonderful to see so many happy students playing games and enjoying the festivities. Thank you to our Co-Chairs Rachel Ririe and Laurie Fotia, and to all of our Fall Festival Committee members. Everyone put forth great effort to make it such a fun event! We can’t thank you enough! Red Ribbon week also went very well! Finally, the School Spirit Costume Parade was just great fun. This parade is one of my favorite school events due to our students’ sheer happiness and joy for this special dress up day. November’s Non-School Days: November brings holidays and parent conferences! We will have no school on Wednesday, November 11th, Thursday November 12th and Friday, November 13th. The 11th is Veterans Day and a U.S. holiday. November 12 and 13th are for training and first trimester grading respectively. We also have 5 (Continued on page 2) Page 2 Message from the Principal (Continued from page 1) minimum days to conduct parent-teacher conferences this month. These minimum days are November 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20. In addition, there is no school the week of November 23rd – 27th for Thanksgiving vacation. A Note of Thanks: As we begin November, we think of the many things we are thankful for during the year. I want to thank each and every one of our families for making our staff feel so supported at Mariposa! We are thankful for our regular volunteers who help day in and day out at our school! We also are thankful for our generous and encouraging PTA! Most importantly, we are thankful for your amazing children! Our students make coming to school each day a pleasure! I hope that your family has a well deserved, restful Thanksgiving break. May you have a peaceful holiday filled with the blessings of time, friends, and family. Scott Bohlender, Principal Gift to School Committee As was done last year, collectively, our PTA and school have a “Gift to School” Committee. This working group is composed of equal numbers of Mariposa staff and PTA members. The Committee makes recommendations to the PTA regarding its donations to Mariposa from the funds which the PTA raises. For example, the Gift to School Committee would make recommendations to the PTA towards the focus of our spring “A-Thon” fundraiser. The Gift to School Committee members are PTA members Jennifer Walker, Jen Ball, and Jennifer Moore. Staff members are Mara Comadena, Terri West, and Scott Bohlender. The Gift to School Committee welcomes your thoughts and suggestions for possible “Gifts to School.” Please use the Suggestion Form in this newsletter to share your ideas with the Gift to School Committee. Simple bring your completed form to Mariposa’s office. Additional copies of this form are available in the school office & on the school web site as well. Mariposa Membership Report Thank you Mariposa Monarchs for joining our PTA! We have 422 members and people are still joining. Membership is open year-round. The top classes with the most memberships are: Mrs. Young and Mrs. Zofrea’s class These two classes will receive a pizza party! Page 3 Message from the PTA President Hello Mariposa Families & Friends! It’s hard to believe that we are already in the month of November and Thanksgiving is just around the corner! Can it really be that the first trimester of school is coming to an end? We have so much to be thankful for here at Mariposa. We are blessed to be at a school where families value education, volunteerism, and are happy to give their time and energy to help our school be successful. I am especially grateful to Rachel Ririe and Laurie Fotia for organizing our Fall Festival. Their hours of dedication and organization made it a memorable day for all of our families. Rachel and Laurie had an amazing team of helpers! Thank you to Steffani Fisher for handling our food booths; Dana Linder for doing a beautiful job of decorating; Jessica Washburn for managing our bake sale; and Penny Flory for making sure our prize booth was a success. In addition, Melanie Palacios, Nadia Munar, and Neil Derry spent hours preparing for our silent auction. The Fall Festival is a HUGE job and they made it look effortless! Fall Festival is one of PTA’s largest fundraisers and its proceeds are used to cover the expenses for most of the programs that we provide to our children. Our Reflection Chairs, Mari and Mark Mizutani, were busy last month collecting entries for the “Let Your Imagination Fly” PTA Reflections Program. As always, there was so much amazing art and other talents! Our Reflections Showcase was delightful and a special evening for all families involved. Thank you to everyone who participated. A big shout out to many parents who helped with the Mt. Sac race! These parents coached, punched cards, planned extra training sessions, and kept us all inspired. Thank you Cassie Ver Steeg, Carol Bartley, Chuck Cole, Lillian Widener, and many more! In addition, thanks to these same parents for promoting a fit and active lifestyle by encouraging us to fill out our “Fire Up Your Feet!” activity logs. Becky Hales and Nicole Steenhausen took care of our 5th grade yearbook dedications this past month. Ama Scorzelli was able to secure us several lunch bin buckets for free from Home Depot. She also sponsored a “Redlands Gymnastics Club” Fitness Friday that was very well attended. Julie Federico spent countless hours pruning our topiaries and keeping our bushes trimmed. Did you see the cute “Share-n-Getty” produce stand outside the MPR? Julie and family made that just for our garden club. Kim Garber is in charge of setting up assemblies for our students this year. This is such an important job! In October, the PTA was able to bring in the “Imagination Machine” which encourages children to think creatively when writing. It was a huge hit! This month Kim has set up a “BMX Freestyle Team” assembly which the kids always look forward to. Thank you Kim! I am also thrilled to announce that through the hard work of Carrie Lopez and Carol Bartley, Mariposa has over 420 members in our PTA this year! Wow, that is exciting! I hope all of you enjoy your extra days off this month as well as have a peaceful Thanksgiving vacation. Take care and thank you for your continued support. Grateful, Jennifer Walker PTA President Page 4 Thank you to all for the Fall Festival!!! Many Mariposa families enjoyed a beautiful autumn evening at the annual Fall Festival on October 24th. All the money that was raised goes to the PTA general fund, which supports the school through scholarships, library, assemblies and many other worthwhile projects. Children enjoyed the game booths and climbing to new heights on the Rock Climber! Students and families won cakes as they danced along the cakewalk to music played by our awesome DJ, Bill Chaffee. Families bid on and won beautiful gift baskets at the Silent Auction. Once again, Pirate’s cove was amazing. Thank you to all those 5th grade parents that helped with the “Haunting” efforts! Everyone enjoyed delicious food from the Food Court and Bake Sale while strolling amid the amazing witch hats decorated by students. Thanks to all of you who came to the festival and supported this PTA fundraiser through your time, talents, and donations. You can submit your pictures by uploading them to our Facebook group “Mariposa Elementary Yearbook.” You can also send them to Nicole Steenhausen at [email protected] or to Becky Hales at [email protected]. Becky Hales and Nicole Steenhausen Share-n-Getty Produce Stand Please take notice of our new “Garden Club” produce stand located outside of the MPR. Feel free to share fresh produce from your home garden as well. Have more lemons than you can squeeze? Bring them in a bag to the “Share-n-Getty” stand and I am sure they will quickly find a home! Neha Yogi, Wee Share Chair Page 8 Hello, my name is Vanessa Leslie and I’m thrilled to be the Box Tops for Education™ Coordinator for Mariposa Elementary. Clipping Box Tops is an easy way for you to help our school earn cash. Last school year, we earned $1,093.50. This school year, our school’s earnings goal is $1,500.00. Are you a Box Tops member? Sign up at www.BTFE.com to stay updated on our school’s earnings and find a full list of hundreds of participating products. Members also receive exclusive coupon offers and recipes and can learn about extra ways for our school to earn more cash. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. I’m here to make our school’s Box Tops for Education program a huge success this year. Our school receives two checks from the Box Tops for Education™ program each school year, one in December and one in April. If you turn in your Box Tops you can help boost the amount of the first check we receive in December. Our PTA hosts 3 challenges throughout the year. Our first challenge deadline is November 6th. The top upper and lower class wins an extra recess and doughnut treat from the PTA. Hurry, clip your Box Tops and turn them in before the deadline. Thanks for your help! Here are some helpful tips to submit your Box Tops: 1. Please submit your box tops on the attached collection sheet. Tape or glue Box Tops on the sheet. Do not staple Box Tops to the collection sheet. Be sure to write the teacher’s name on each sheet. Or 2. Bundle your Box Tops in groups of 10 or 50 using a sealable bag or envelope. Please indicate the number of Box Tops in the bag or envelope. It’s alright to have less than 10 or 50 increments, just be sure to label the amount and the teacher’s name. We cannot submit expired Box Tops, so please double-check the dates. We do not collect Labels for Education, so please do not turn those in. You can turn in as many Box Tops as you like. If you need extra collection sheets, they are available in the office or ask your class representative. Once we send in all our Box Tops, our school will receive a check from Box Tops for Education™ in December and can use this cash to buy the things we need. Thanks for your help!
