The Holy Father’s Intentions for April 2012
General: Vocations. That many young people may hear the
call of Christ and follow him in the priesthood and religious
life.
Missionary: Christ, Hope for Africans. That the risen Christ
may be a sign of certain hope for the men and women of the
African continent.
May, the Month of Blessed Mother,
Dear bothers and sisters,
The month of May is the "month which
the piety of the faithful has especially
dedicated to Our Blessed Lady," and it
is the occasion for a "moving tribute of
faith and love which Catholics in every
part of the world pay to the Queen of
Heaven. During this month Christians,
both in church and in the privacy of the
home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially
fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this
month, too, the benefits of God's mercy come down to us
from her throne in greater abundance" (Paul VI: Encyclical
on the Month of May, no. 1).
This Christian custom of dedicating the month of May to
the Blessed Virgin arose at the end of the 13th century. In
this way, the Church was able to Christianize the secular
feasts which were wanting to take place at that time. In the
16th century, books appeared and fostered this devotion.
The pious practice of honoring Mary during the month of
May has been especially recommended by the Popes. Pius
XII made frequent reference to it and in his great Encyclical
on the Sacred Liturgy (Mediator Dei) characterized it as
one of "other exercises of piety which although not strictly
belonging to the Sacred Liturgy, are nevertheless of special
import and dignity, and may be considered in a certain way
to be an addition to the liturgical devotion: they have been
approved and praised over and over again by the Apostolic
See and by the Bishops" (no. 182).
Paul VI wrote a short encyclical in 1965 using the Month
of Mary devotion as a means of obtaining prayers for
peace. He urged the faithful to make use of this practice
which is "gladdening and consoling" and by which the
Blessed Virgin Mary is honored and the Christian people
are enriched with spiritual gifts" (no. 2).
In May of 2002 Pope John Paul II said, "Today we begin
the month dedicated to Our Lady a favorite of popular
devotion. In accord with a long-standing tradition of
devotion, parishes and families continue to make the
month of May a 'Marian' month, celebrating it with many
devout liturgical, catechetical and pastoral initiatives!" Let
us do it in our homes and in our parish. With prayers and
Blessings,
Your brother in Christ

PRO LIFE
Fetal Development Month 1
During this first amazing month of life the
baby grows to 10,000 times his size at
conception. He is totally dependent upon his mother.
Between mother and child lies the vital organ called the
placenta. Here vessels from the mother and baby
intertwine without joining, highlighting this newly formed
relationship - mutual, nourishing and deeply connected.
By the third week the baby’s tiny heart begins to beat.
NATIONAL ROSARY CRUSADE
It is time to launch a National Rosary Crusade
to save America and the world. Please pledge to pray
one rosary a day for the conversion of America and the
Triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. If you have
a computer, you can check out the web site:
www.nationalrosarycrusade.com. Please direct questions
to: National Rosary Crusade PO Box 355, Napa, CA.

bring about another great Rosary victory!
On November 9, 1976, Karol Cardinal Wojtyla
(Pope John Paul II) said: We are now standing in the face
of the greatest historical confrontation humanity has gone
through. I do not think that wide circles of American society
or wide circles of the Christian community realize this fully.
We are now facing the final confrontation between the
Church and the Anti-Church, of the Gospel versus the
anti-Gospel.
Our deepest condolences to John & Jennifer Balint and their
family on the death of Jennifer’s father,
Douglas J. Smith
May the Lord grant him eternal rest and
comfort to family and friends who share
the loss.
You are in our prayers.
