Ultraviolet,UVAandUVBradiationisaccumulatedoveralifetime.UVAareagingand
cancercausingrays.Theyinitiateretinaldamageinyoungchildrenbecauseoftheearly
transparencyofthecrystallinelens,overtimecauseskinchangesandtheirabsorption
inthecrystallinelensresultsinlensesthatgetyellowerandyelloweruntiltheyneedto
beextracted.
Next,thehigh-energyvisibleradiation(HEV),theshortbluevioletwavelengthsbetween
415and455nmareassociatedwithretinalproblemsandagerelatedmacular
degeneration.
BUT,therestofthespectrumoflight,startingwiththelongerwavelengthblueis
importanttothebody.Why?

Itscattersbecauseitiseasilybentorrefractedsothatsunlight’sshortbluerays
crisscrossovereachother,thereasonforthebluesky.Thisscatterproduceshaze,a
kindofglare.
Theshortwavelengthblueisalsonotfocusedontheretinawhenpartofwhitelight.
Thelongerwavelength,greenisfocusedontheretina,shorterwavelengthslikeblue
focusinfrontoftheretina,longer,likered,behind.Inanattempttofocusalllight,the
eyewilluseupenergy.
Offcenterinprescriptionlenses,theprismseparatesthewavelengthsandtheresulting
chromaticaberrationproducesabluesmearononesideofthemosaicofobjectslooked
atcausingblur,reducingtheclearfieldofview.
12.But,lightandinfact,bluelighttakestwodifferentpathwaysintheeyeforusein
ourbodies.

formelectricpulsesinterpretedbythebrain.
TheotheristheRetina(nervelayeroftheeye)-Hypothalamus(portionofthebrain

arrow.Theblue-violetisreduced,thelongerblue-turquoiseisalsoreducedandthenat
about510nm,bluegreen,transmissionincreases.Thislensisbrownincolorandwhen
lookingthroughit,castsareddishtinttotheworldthatyouwouldsee.
10.Incontrast,thisisabrown3,tintedlens,alsoinhardresin.
100%oftheUVisabsorbed,almostalloftheshortblue,allofthelongblue,mostofthe
green(550nm)thenrampingup.So,eventhoughthislensishardresin,thetinthelps
absorballtheUV.
So,thesefirsttwolenses,brownincolor‘see’verydifferently.Theyshiftthecolorsthat
wearer’s‘see’(perceive)andaddcontrastbyreducingtheshortwavelengthscattering
blue.
11.Youmighthaveaskedaboutagray3,lens.Here’sthatgraph.
AlittleUV,lessoftheshortblue-violet,moreofthelongerbluebutthenprettyflat
acrossallthewavelengthsuntilredandincreasessteeply.Thistypeoffilterlensis
referredtoas‘neutraldensity’i.e.,allthecolorsaretransmittedmoreorlessequallyso
whenwearingthelenses,colorsarenotchanged.Therearesomepatientsthatdon't
likethecolorshiftofbrownssoprefergray.
Ihopethatyoucanseehowtransmissioncurvesareusefultounderstand,ingeneral
whatpatientsseeandonewayconfirmtheprotectivepropertiesofsunlenses.
12.Thatmeansthatforeverynewsunglass,youwanttoquestionthe‘transmission
curve’attributesofthelensesyouorder,promoteanddispense.
