PARTICLE DIAGRAMS PARTICLE DIAGRAMS • Atoms & molecules are way too small to see. But it’s important to “see” them so that we can explain why something is happening. So, we use particle diagrams. • Particle Diagrams used to show the particles (atoms or molecules) in a substance. • They’re drawings (diagrams) that show the particles in a substance. • We draw particle diagrams for solids, liquids and gases. All of the examples in this powerpoint are gases. WHAT CAN YOU SEE IN A PARTICLE DIAGRAM? • Mass: A measure of how much “stuff ” there is. Essentially, how many particles, and how “massive” the particles are. l Smal mass • Volume: A up. Bigge r mass measure of how much space the particles take l Smal e volum Bigge volum r e WHAT CAN YOU SEE IN A PARTICLE DIAGRAM? • Temperature: Temperature just measures how fast the particles are moving. Faster temperature = faster particles. It’s hard to show movement in a particle diagram... so we use wooshies. e Lowe r u t a r Tem er p m pera e T r e ture High
