HOW TO RUN R ESPON SI BI LI TY L AUN CHER IN YOUR CLASSROOM: 1) Go to www.icivics.org/games, scroll down, and click on the game icon. 2) Wait for the game to load and then click “New Game.” 3) On the first screen, students will see a citizen, a launcher, Liberty Belle, and a box depicting different kinds of golden anvils. These anvils represent different civic responsibilities: Community Service (“C”), Getting an Education (“E”), Staying Informed (“I”), Jury Duty (“J”), Military Service (“M”), Following the Law (“L”), Respecting Others (“R”), Speaking Your Mind (“S”), Paying Taxes (“T”), and Voting (“V”). 4) The citizen will briefly explain his or her problem. Students should look through the civic responsibilities (using the arrow buttons) to find the one which could solve the citizen’s problem. Students may curse over the citizen to reread his or her issue. 5) Students should select the correct anvil and then click the launcher, and Liberty Belle will move it into place. 6) After the anvil is loaded, students should move Liberty Belle to the “Launch!” handle in the bottom right of the screen. Pulling the handle will send the anvil towards the citizen. 7) If the student has selected the correct civic responsibility, the anvil will lift the citizen, and he or she will give a positive response in a green box. If an incorrect civic responsibility has been launched, the anvil will hit the citizen, and he or she will give a confused response in a red box. The student moves on to the second level once the correct responsibility has been launched at the problem. A score sheet will appear at the end of each level. There are five levels. 8) As students advance to higher levels, they will need to help an increasing number of citizens and will have an increasing number of civic responsibilities to choose from. Each citizen requires a different civic responsibility to solve his or her problem. Students may launch multiple anvils at once.
