2016 Time of Remembrance Sponsorship Opportunities
Sponsor the Northern California JACL’s 2016 Time of Remembrance program plus the
docent-led tours for 4,000 students of the award-winning California Museum’s “Uprooted –
the Japanese American Experience Exhibit”. Help raise awareness of the consequences of
Executive Order 9066, which sent 120,000 innocent West Coast Japanese Americans to
American World War II concentration camps. Help promote vigilance to prevent such a
tragedy from happening in America again.
Your sponsorship supports:
* An award-winning California Museum exhibit – “Uprooted – The Japanese American
Experience.”
Educational opportunities for about 4,000 students from throughout California.
Student participants explore concepts of citizenship, constitutionality, and redress.
A February 13th community-wide remembrance of the incarceration at the Secretary of
State Auditorium located at 11th and O. Streets.
About the Programs
During the thought-provoking Time of Remembrance Exhibit “Uprooted”,
volunteer docents, many of them former WWII detainees, offer historical overviews and
first-hand experiences. The student tour program will be held for 8 weeks from January 25
through March 18, 2016 at the California Museum.
* A community-wide commemoration of the imprisonment of Japanese Americans will be
held on Saturday, February 13, 2016 1pm-3pm, followed by a reception at the California
Museum with light refreshments at 3:00 – 4:00 pm. This event features the local movie
premiere of “The Untold Story: Internment of Japanese Americans in Hawaii” by the Japanese
Cultural Center of Hawaii, led by President Carol Hayashino who will present the film. This
film shares the unique story of how most Japanese Americans in Hawaii avoided imprisonment
in oncentration camps set up for those on the west coast.
The California Museum also features the award-winning exhibit “Uprooted: The Japanese
American WWII Experience“. You’re invited to view it during the 3 – 4 pm reception after
the Time of Remembrance program.
This year’s Northern California Time of Remembrance (NCTOR) is the 74th
anniversary of the historic February 19, 1942 Executive Order 9066 imprisoning 120,000
Japanese Americans during World War II. The Time of Remembrance shares the story of
the unfair backlash against the Japanese American community, plus the civil rights, civil
liberties, and human rights lessons for America today.
The ”Unity Candle Lighting Ceremony” features dedicated community leaders taking up
the lessons of the WWII incarceration and the challenges America faces today. Focusing on
the increasingly frightening threats to other innocent American’s today, this year’s theme is
“Challenges of the Past; Parallels for Today”. We commemorate the tragedy and
struggle not just to remember the past, but to use those lessons as a guide for the future.
