Our mission was to rid the mountainside of the enemy that had been attacking our Forward Operating Bases. We huddled close to stay warm and bed down until our observation point shift. The AP reporter that was with us pulled a satellite phone from his sack, asking if anyone wanted to call home on Christmas Eve with the little power the phone had. He handed it to the 1st soldier who looked at it before passing it to another whose wife was pregnant. That soldier handed it to another whose mother was gravely ill in the hospital. The phone continued to pass unused until it made it back to the reporter. After they began to sleep, the reporter asked me, “Sergeant Major, where do you get soldiers like this?” My answer was short, “Soldiers like this come from America.” What was unusual to the reporter was common to me; soldiers putting others before themselves, loving their country, placing honor, duty, country and freedom above all else. — Command Sgt Maj Gretchen Evans, USA (Ret), (left) with Col E.
