Revised time table The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia Decision on the Extension of the Period for the Registration of Candidates For the Fourth Round General Elections to be Held in 2010 At its 112 th extra-ordinary meeting held on February 1, 2010, the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia solemnly and profoundly considered the petition submitted by various political organizations whereby they requested for the extension of the period for the registration of candidates, stating that they were constrained by events beyond their control from proceeding sufficiently enough to be able to register their candidates within the given time. The Board took note of the fact that the election is generally proceeding according to the election timetable issued by it; and expressed its belief that due to the inevitable constraint of time it entails, granting the request of the parties would have serious implications as regards the time allotted on the election timetable for the preparations concerning the polling. However, 1/8 Revised time table - Recalling that it has already extended the period for the registration of candidates by ten days pursuant to similar requests made by various political parties when the proposed election timetable for the 2010 election was discussed with the political parties on November 24, 2009; and - Convinced that allowing ample time for the registration of candidates will enable all political parties to fully participate and compete in the election by registering their candidates completely, and thereby avail the electorate with various thoroughly expounded options, with the concomitant effect of enhancing the free, fair and peaceful nature of the election and increasing its credibility in the eyes of the public; Therefore, the Board decided at its 112 th extraordinary meeting held on February 1, 2010, to extend the period for the registration of candidates by an additional 20 days. Thus, the period for the registration of candidates, which would have terminated on February 2, 2010 will now terminate on February 22, 2010. Therefore, the Board reminds all competing political organizations to take note of the fact that this decision definitively concludes the question of extension of time, and calls upon them to take advantage of this opportunity. 2/8 Revised time table The election timetable, adjusted only to reflect the extended period for the registration of candidates without affecting the time allotted for other aspects of the electoral process is listed hereunder. All Ethiopians and competing political parties shall bear in mind that the registration of voters will be conducted from January 9 to 17, 2010 and that voting shall take place on May 23, 2010 as has been previously announced. 2. Competing political parties are advised to note that this extension is the final one to be granted. 3. As such, they should proceed accordingly and register their candidates in constituencies where they have not done so yet. 4. The Board firmly notifies its Regional Branch Offices and the Constituency Electoral Offices at various levels to appropriately receive and register candidates in accordance with the extended period for the registration of candidates.
