Newsletter 31st October, 2013

Principal’s Message
No. 32, 31st October, 2013
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Year 12 Exams are underway
We wish our Year 12’s all the best in their exams over the coming weeks. So many of us can remember the nervousness we felt at that
time, and in solidarity, let’s keep them all in our thoughts and prayers! If you’re visiting the school within the next week, please be aware
that Apsley House (the Reception area) is a quiet zone, while the exams occur upstairs.
Best Wishes
As next week is a shortened school week, there will be no Newsletter. In advance then, we acknowledge that on Friday 8th November, Mrs
Belinda Lees will begin maternity leave. We wish Belinda, and her husband Chris, all the best for the safe and happy arrival of their first
child!
Mr Toby Gilmour has returned from overseas and will be teaching Mrs Lees’ classes for the remainder of the year.
VCE Arts and Technology Exhibition
It was fantastic to see so many people visit our Art & Technology Exhibition last week. The amazing work completed by our senior
students is definitely worthy of public display. Thanks to the teachers and staff who spent hours bringing each of the installations to life for
the rest of us to enjoy! On Opening Night we had over one hundred people through, and each day has seen dozens more ‘walk-ins’.
Congratulations to all involved!
Public Safety Exhibition
Next Wednesday, our Cert III Public Safety students are displaying their work and promoting safety in local industries. You are welcome
to come and see their efforts, which will be on display in the Hall from midday to 3pm. This class is undertaking a new subject this year,
and in conjunction with the CFA, have been learning some amazing new skills, and building significant knowledge in the area of Public
Safety, that they would like to share with you all.
Uniform Shop changes
In the coming days, each family will receive a letter about changes to our Uniform Shop arrangements. We’ve entered a new phase in
catering for our familyies needs, and hope that this change assists you in accessing the school uniform at convenient times.
Long weekend
This coming weekend is a long weekend for St Joseph’s families. We hope you have a win on the Cup, and look forward to seeing
everyone back safe and sound next Wednesday. The front office will be open on Monday as VCE Exams continue on this day, however if
you have matters that can be held over until Wednesday, that would be greatly appreciated.
Let yourself be changed! (Luke 19:1-10)
This week’s Gospel story is the gorgeous account of Jesus and Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus is a tax collector that many people don’t like. Jesus
invites himself to a meal at Zacchaeus’ house, and the rest, as they say, is history! Zaccheaus’ experience of meeting Jesus and sharing a
meal with him effects him so dramatically, that he immediately decides to give his money to the poor, and promises to change his ways and
start living in a more just and loving way. The challenge for us in response to this story, is to allow the stories of Jesus and of other holy
men and women to inspire us to change for the better. This week, let’s let the goodness of another person, whether that be Jesus or
someone we know who inspires us, to prompt us to action in ways that change our world, and change ourselves. Amen.
PeaceandBlessings,

Facts About the Transforming Global Religious Landscape
Here are some interesting facts that may whet your curiosity. Recent studies regarding the state of religion in
today’s world have found:
1.
Christianity dominates the World’s Religions.
2.
Christianity is a majority in over 157 countries in the world and is the majority in 4 of the 6 major
geographical regions in the world – Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, Europe, SubSaharan Africa.
3.
Hindus are very geographically concentrated in only three countries – India, Mauritius and Nepal.
4.
There is only one country in the world where Jews are in the majority – Israel.
5.
A Third of the World is religiously unaffiliated. Roughly one in six people around the globe do not
identify as religious.
6.
The median age of a Jew is 36, a Christian 31 and a Muslim is 23 years.
7.
Most countries in the world have a majority religion (where their group is a religious majority of the
population), except: the Ivory Coast, Macau, Nigeria, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam,
where people come from a wide variety of religious beliefs.
And what are my conclusions? Well, we are certainly a diverse bunch and isn’t the world richer for it!
O God, the giver of life,
We pray for Churches throughout the world:
Sanctify its life; renew its worship;
Empower its witness; restore its unity.
Remove from people all pride
And every prejudice that dulls their will for unity.
Strengthen the work of all those who strive and seek
That common understandings will bind us together.
Heal the divisions which separate your children from one another
That they may keep the unity of the Spirit
And live together in a spirit of peace.
Amen.

Year 9 Camp 2013
I must start by expressing how proud I am of the Year 9 students who challenged themselves and braved the elements of strong
winds, rain and very cold temperatures on the Camp to Eildon this year. They were an absolute delight to take on the trip from the
moment we got on the bus to start our adventure, until the moment we arrived home. The leaders from the Outdoor Education
Group told me that this group of students displayed exceptional leadership qualities and used their initiative to get jobs done, carry
group equipment and were a great support to each other. These students demonstrated that they are resilient young people who can
overcome difficult obstacles presented to them and make the best of it with a laugh, a joke and a smile, no matter how hard the
situation may be.
There were many challenges which the students faced during their time on camp, the most obvious of ones being the personal
challenges and having the students realize they can get up and down the extremely steep mountains with 10 - 12 kilo packs on.
Some groups went without a shower for the whole time they were there and felt that was a huge accomplishment, while many other
students had not rafted before and battled the freezing water of the Goulburn River. They did this while supporting each person in
the group, whether it be with a helping hand, words of encouragement or singing their group’s theme song.
Some underlying challenges were that the students were also required to show respect for the environment they were living in. This
meant that any rubbish they took to the camp site, they took back out again. I was pleased with how the students left their area so
clean, not even a piece of cooked pasta was to be left in the dirt on the ground. It demonstrated that they took pride in the area they
were working in for those few days. I expect that the students will take as much care within their school environment from the
lessons they have leant about rubbish.
Cooking of the evening meals is always interesting to watch. The students came up with many different varieties of pasta, stir fry,
fried rice and desserts. They also needed to ensure they were safe while lighting the fuel and watching their movement around hot
stoves on the ground. Taste testing the food my group cooked made me realize that they are quite talented when cooking on a
Trangia and a wok!
Each student has many funny stories to tell about their time in the outdoors and as I was listening to them in the Year 9 area over
the past few days, they were buzzing with tales of their experiences. There were many inside jokes going on among each group
with their teachers and explanations of some of the trips and falls we had. I hope they are still talking about this for the years to
come.
I would like to thank the staff who attended the camp; Mr. Glenn Roberts, Mr. Richard Ogilvie, Mr. Ted Ripon, Mr. Matt Angove,
Mr. Cam Parker, Mr. Mark Cybula, Miss Brenda Auhl, Miss Ash Mangan, Miss Jenna Fullard and Miss Elle Florance. These
teachers also made the experience enjoyable and memorable for our Year 9 students. They showed exceptional care towards each
person in their group and have developed stronger working relationships with the students.
