PRINCIPAL REPORT
Thank you for the feedback you have given us regarding the SMS system we have put in place for
notification of student absences. Just to clarify for you, if you reply to that SMS it is the same as
sending in a note, or making a separate call. You don’t need to do both. Your reply goes to our
computer and is then transferred to the attendance program. We are now getting a lot more
explanations for absences.
We continue to aim at reducing absenteeism across the school. I have placed a very clear table
elsewhere in this newsletter which shows exactly how much instruction time children miss when they
are absent. You see, learnings missed by absenteeism require a lot of additional effort to be on track again.
If you are in doubt, speak to your class teacher and ask them to show you where just one item is taught at the level your
child is now at, and where it reappears or is used in the curriculum over the next few years.
Next Monday is a Professional Learning Day for staff and so children are required to stay home on that day.
During the day staff will be reviewing our progress in the PBS (Positive Behaviours Strategies) program we are
implementing into the school. This will be a progressive yet long term process lead by a now established committee.
PBS is based on the research that says good behaviour needs to be taught. If a child can’t read we teach him, if he can’t
spell we teach him, if he can’t catch a ball we teach, so it goes that if a child does not know the appropriate or expected
behaviour we should teach it. As with any learning most children “get it” straight away, some take a while longer and
others may take even longer still. The basis of PBS is that across the school the expectations and language for teaching
behaviour will be common.

PRE-PRIMARY
The Pre-primary students have been looking after our Earth. We are recycling and reusing lots of things in our
classroom. We are also saving water. We collect the water from our sinks and put it on our gardens. Today we planted
lots of herbs and vegies into the school garden. These will be used in our canteen to provide us with fresh and healthy
food. Children spent time collecting caterpillars so that the plants do not need to be sprayed with chemicals.

VACSWIM
Enrolments for December/January programs are
now open. It is important for every child to learn to
swim and develop essential water safety skills.
VacSwim’s school holiday swimming programs are
conducted by qualified instructors who teach
children the skills to be confident swimmers and
safe in the water. This year there has been a small
price increase from $10.00 per enrolment to $12.50
per enrolment (family enrolment for three or more children living at the same address is now $34.50). For
further information and online enrolment visit education.wa.edu.au/swimming

YEAR 4
This term the Year 4 class is looking at Animal Welfare. So far we have made posters on the Five Rights of Animals,
learnt about the changing format of zoos and their role in the world today, and written a persuasive text as why zoos are
important. We are now reading “Queenie” the true story of the elephant that was destroyed at the Melbourne Zoo in
1945, creating story maps and writing persuasive letters as to why she should be kept alive.
WHY DO WE NEED ZOOS? By Ruby
I have to say that why wouldn’t anyone like zoos? I mean what is so bad about them? As long as the animals are in
good hands, then zoos are great!
Zoos provide a recreational venue where people get to see exotic animals. They also get to see animals they wouldn’t
see in everyday life. Zoos can also make kids feel happy.
Secondly, zoos provide interesting knowledge of animals. Zoos provide information about what animals eat, where
they come from and how they survive in the wild. The fascinating information can teach kids about the animals in their
world.
Zoos can also be like a rescue place. They can get some of the amazing endangered animals and encourage them to
breed to save their species. If this is successful they can then find out more information about that animal.
So think about this and remember that zoos provide great knowledge, help endangered species and show people
amazing animals.
MATHLETICS STAR’S OF THE WEEK
It has been a while since reporting on the champion
efforts placed by students in their study of
Mathematics through Mathletics. This week 3
students took out the honours, Ryan, Corey and
Sonny. Sonny will enjoy displaying the trophy for
this week.

HEAD LICE
Several incidences of Head Lice have been detected at
school. We ask all parents to please inspect their child
and all family members’ hair tonight, then daily for one
week and commence treatment if necessary. Should head
lice be detected, children are to be excluded from school
until appropriate treatment has been undertaken.
Kindy and Year 2/3 Blue Buddies
The children were all excited to be working with their buddies again this week. After having a quick reminder on how
to use the camera on the iPads, the buddies wandered around the school yard searching for mini beasts to photograph.
We found ants, spiders, bugs, caterpillars, lady birds, cocoons and more. Next week, the buddies will work together to
create a book about the mini beasts.
