Characteristics of a Skilled Reader • Recognizes most words automatically, so attention can be focused on the meaning of the words that have been read. • Has good decoding skills and uses them to read new words. Decoding is reading words by wounding out letters in the right order within a word. • Reads in phrases and pays attention to punctuation marks, such as commas and periods. • Reads aloud smoothly so that reading sounds and flows like natural speech.
