These are our private beliefs and biases about race and racism, influenced by our culture. INTERPERSONAL racism occurs between individuals when people’s private racial beliefs affect their public interactions. SYSTEMS-LEVEL INSTITUTIONAL racism occurs within institutions (i.e. school, workplaces, media). It is the unfair policies and practices that routinely produce disparate outcomes for people of color. STRUCTURAL racism is perpetuated among institutions and across society. It involves the cumulative and compounding effects of history, culture, ideology, and the interactions of institutions.
