January 2017 Newsletter
Escanaba Senior Center Mon-Fri, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.
When I think of January, I usually think of the New
Year, setting new goals and cold weather. As it
turns out though, there is a whole lot more to
January than just those things!
5) More couples separate or divorce in January
than in any other month.
So in effort to shed some light on the coolness
that is the month of January, here are a few facts
you might not know.
Some famous people born in the month of January are: Alan Alda, actor; Alexander Hamilton, politician; Benedict Arnold, American soldier and traitor; Benjamin Franklin, politician, inventor, scientist; Dolly Parton, singer; Donna Reed, actress;
and Elvis Presley, singer.
1) January is named after the Roman god Janus,
who was revered as the “God of Gateways,”
who was always shown as having two heads.
He looked back to the last year and forward to
the new one.
2) The Anglo-Saxons called January
“Wulfmonath” as it was the month hungry
wolves came scavenging at people’s doors.
3) It’s National Soup Month in the United States.
4) The only Shakespeare plays that mention
January are Much Ado About Nothing and Winter’s Tale.
6) Jan. 1 is both the furthest away and closest
day to Dec. 31.
Happy New Years and stay warm this month!

January 2017
Happy New Year! 2017 is here! Let’s
make this year even better than last
year by enjoying what the center has to
offer. We try to keep your mind and body busy all
year long. We hope you can find something about
our center that makes you want to join in our activities. Whether that is just for a meal each day, or
for a meal on party days. If you are more active,
then exercise class is a great way to keep in
shape. If you are more laid back, then perhaps a
craft or computer class or playing cards is your
thing. Whatever you like to do, I hope you can find
something here to compliment your lifestyle. You
are only as old as you feel, so don’t let yourself
feel old. They say if you never stop playing, then
you will never grow up. So, we encourage people
to have fun and enjoy the activities we offer. We
are always open to suggestions too. This is your
center. Make it great!

Well, 2017 is here. Open enrollment season ended
in December. Perhaps you still have issues with
your plan or have other questions about your coverage that you need answers for. There are counselors just like me all over the U.P. to help you. Most
local senior centers have a counselor on staff, or
will be able to connect you with a counselor to assist you.
If you missed open enrollment, and are not in a
drug plan yet, perhaps applying for “Extra Help”
through Social Security may help you get into a
plan. It is a plan that helps low-income beneficiaries get into a drug plan without having a penalty,
and also allows you the freedom of switching plans
each month if need be to get you the best plan to
cover your medications. For more information, or to
get help enrolling, contact your MMAP counselor.

Positive Thinking….
Positive thinking is more then just a
tagline.
It changes the way we behave.
And I firmly believe that when we are
positive,
it not only makes us better,
but it also makes those around us
better.

The Hermansville Senior Center has various activities going on every week.
Every day you can come to the center and “Walk in
the Gym.” It’s good exercise, and walking with others can be fun. You can walk anytime from 9 a.m. to
3 p.m. We also have a treadmill for walking . If you
want to just come to the center to enjoy other’s
company,
we have “Morning Coffee” each day.
We also have “Fun Bingo” Tuesdays and Fridays
starting at 12:45 p.m. Fifteen games are played.
“Cards” are played Wednesday afternoons.
“Craft Day” is Monday, Jan. 16
“Foot Clinic” is on Tuesday, Jan. 17. The nurse gets
here around 9 a.m. Cost is $12. Be sure to bring a
towel. Call the Center to register for the Foot Clinic.
Each month we have a “Birthday Day” dinner for
that month. Our January Birthday Day Dinner will be
on
Jan. 25, starting at noon. Menu is pork chops, diced
potatoes, Capri blend and pineapple tidbits.
Please call one business day ahead to reserve your
meal, or call the center for more information.
We would love to have anyone visit at any time, and
bring a friend or two.
Humor of Christmas
After being away on business for a week before Christmas, Tom thought it would be
nice to bring his wife a little gift.
"How about some perfume?" he asked
the cosmetics clerk.
She showed him a bottle costing $50.
"That's a bit much," said Tom, so she returned
with a smaller bottle for $30.
"That’s still quite a bit," Tom groused.
Growing disgusted, the clerk brought
out a tiny $15 bottle.
Tom grew agitated, "What I mean is,” he said, “I'd like to
see something real cheap.”
So the clerk handed him a mirror.

HELPFUL WINTER IDEAS
Avoid Slipping on Ice
Icy, snowy roads and sidewalks make it easy to slip
and fall.
Dress for Warmth
Cold temperatures can lead to frostbite and hypothermia. Be careful out doors, and don't let indoor
temperatures go too low and dress in layers.
Fight Wintertime Depression
Because it can be difficult and dangerous to get
around, many seniors have less contact with others
during cold months. Keep in touch with loved ones,
and make sure to ask for help if needed.
Check the Car
Driving during the winter can be hazardous for anyone. If you are unsure of driving conditions, please
call someone to see if they can help with shopping
or doctor appointments.

Tax time is near!
Most senior citizens qualify for two tax credits
(Homestead Property Tax Credit and the Home
Heating Tax Credit) offered by the state of Michigan. The center will begin making appointments
to discuss these credits Feb. 1. Call 753-6986 for
assistance with these credits. Certain documents
need to be brought to your scheduled appointment. These include: 1099 Social Security statement for 2016; interest and dividend income for
2016; retirement pension; annuity and IRA benefits from 2016; SSI benefits for 2016; property tax
statements (both summer and winter) from 2016
or rental receipts; a printout from your fuel provider stating how much you were billed for fuel
from Nov. 1, 2015 through Oct. 31, 2016. If you
have a supplemental health insurance policy besides Medicare, bring proof showing how much
you paid for that policy in 2016. Dental, vision
and prescription drug plan premiums may also be
claimed. (Not all of these documents will apply to
you; only bring the documents that pertain to
you). As a reminder, I do not prepare federal or
state income taxes. These documents will begin
arriving in the mail in January; it would be a good
idea to put them in a envelope to organize them
for your scheduled appointment.
