PROGRAMMES IN A BOX w/C w/C 17/1 17/11 /11/2008: /2008: COMMUNICATOR BADGE (1 OF 2) Time Activity Notes 5 Welcome & Opening Ceremony Start the evening and explain to them what they will be doing that evening. 15 Game: All in Line - This game tests the Scouts ability to communicate using anything but their voices by making them order themselves in a line across the meeting place without speaking. - Give them the challenge (ie tallest to shortest), then give them a few minutes to arrange themselves before going along the line checking. - Make the next one slightly harder, one which they will have to sign or code etc (date of birth), then go along the line and see how successful they were in ordering themselves youngest to oldest. 10 Patrol Activity: Make a Morse Code Oscillator - Following the instructions, Scout should make their morse code oscillator, which they will use to send messages later. - Explain to Scouts the correct procedure for sending morse code messages, using pauses and stops where necessary. Equipment: Batteries, Bulb holders, bulbs, croc leads. Badge Requirements: Communicator - Communication Codes – Construct a simple morse code oscillator and send a short message Communicator – When sending and receiving a message, demonstrate that you know the appropriate procedure. 20 Patrol Activity: Morse Code Messages (POL 12596) - Give each Patrol a copy of the Morse Code Alphabet resource to help decode the messages - Split the patrol in half, sending each half to opposite ends of the meeting place - Give the Scouts at one end a message (either using the attached sheet or your own ideas) - Scouts send the messages, with the recipients noting down the message. They get a point for every message correctly transferred. Resource: Morse Code Alphabet 10 Patrol Activity: Human Knot (POL 24648) - All the patrol stand in a circle - Everyone lifts up their right arm and grabs anyone elses hand - Then with their left hand, they grab the hand of a different person - Remember to remind them that they cannot grab the person stood next to them or the same person twice or it wont work! - The group then need to unravel themselves without letting go with their hands - The first team to complete the challenge wins. - If you have time, play again. 10 Patrol Activity: Phoentic Alphabet - Give each Patrol a copy of the Phonetic Alphabet list and 10 minutes to work together to learn as much of the alphabet as they can. They should each aim to learn all of the alphabet. Badge Requirements: Communicator - Communication Codes – Construct a simple morse code oscillator and send a short message Resources: Phoentic Alphabet list Communicator - Communication Codes – Know the International Phonetic Alphabet Who PROGRAMMES IN A BOX 15 Game: Frantic Phoentics Equipment: Pens or pencils. - Line each patrol up at one end of the hall. - The leader(s) position themselves opposite each patrol (if you don’t have enough leaders to do this, use the Patrol Leaders instead). - When the game starts, the first player runs to the leader, who says a letter of the alphabet, to which the Scout must reply the corresponding word from the phonetic alphabet within 3 seconds. - If they are correct, mark it on the sheet, if not, leave it blank. - Continue until all letters have been correctly identified, or only one team remains. If you have time after the first round, make it harder by giving a letter, but the Scout has to reply with the corresponding word of the letter after it. (ie leaders says “A”, the answer would be Bravo). 5 Closing Ceremony Wrap up the evening, give out any notices for next week etc. Notices: Give out any notices for the coming weeks.
