In her years as a Wingspan house coordinator, Wendy Thomas
was praised many times by personal physicians for her fearless
compassion for the people she served, and for her great success
at keeping people with complicated health issues well and happy.
Inspired by the complex and serious health care challenges faced
by many at Wingspan, she decided to go back to school and
become a nurse. Today, her R.N. degree in hand, Wendy is Wingspan’s
first fulltime nurse, eliminating the need for contracted nursing
service. “We have better medical oversight than ever before, all of
our consumers and staff have access to nursing, and everyone loves
Wendy,” said Therese Davis, Director of Residential Services.

The wonderful world of theater
n e w
t e r r i t o r i e s
Last December, Kris confided to in-home supervisor Molly Hall
how she missed going to the theater, an experience she had shared
with her mother who had passed away several years ago. Enter
the Guthrie Theater’s Ticket Opportunity Program, which enables
people who do not ordinarily have the means or opportunity to
attend Guthrie performances to do so at greatly reduced prices.
With tickets in hand, more than 50 people from Wingspan have
attended Guthrie performances. “I give Kris the credit for this
wonderful idea that so many at Wingspan are
enjoying so much,” said Molly.

show pride in their

o u t
The participants in Tsev Laus Kaj Siab,Wingspan’s culturally
specific adult day program for the Hmong community, were
eager to exercise their right to vote in last year’s presidential
election — but not before becoming as educated as possible
about the election issues and the differences among presidential
nominees and other candidates running for office. In the
months prior to the election, spirited discussions were held
on a wide variety of election topics, revealing varying opinions
and perspectives based on life experience. Ultimately, the elders
realized they would have to listen to their own consciences and
hearts in making a decision for whom to vote. When election
day arrived, Tsev Laus Kaj Siab was a busy place. Wingspan
staff provided the opportunity for everyone who wished to
vote and needed assistance to get to their polling site. Once
the results were known, some were very thrilled and hopeful,
some were disappointed. But on January 20, everyone watched
the inaugural address, proud to be part of the democratic
process of this country.

and traditional celebrations,

Flying high to benefit Wingspan
o f
c o m m u n i t y
In charge of decorations for the annual Spring Gala fundraiser,
Wingspan program coordinator Jeff Hager thought the gala
theme — “Soaring into the future” — demanded special
centerpieces. He purchased unfinished birdhouses at Michael’s
(which provided a generous discount) and asked all house
coordinators and Tsev Laus Kaj Siab staff to work with the people
they serve to decorate the houses. With much excitement and a
competitive nature, they went to work on their birdhouses. From
a lighthouse to a red barn, from a cabin to a castle, each creation
was fun, eye-catching, colorful and totally unique. In all, 32 birdhouses were put up for sale at the gala’s silent auction, the proceeds
of which help to provide both the essentials and the extras that
contribute to a rich, full life for the people served by Wingspan.
Direct care giver Rachel Theis,
along with Hannah
and Jenny, had fun making
birdhouse centerpieces.
Enjoying time together is a
big part of Wingspan’s culture.
The annual Magnolia Ball is a
favorite night-on-the-town for
many Wingspan consumers, while
the Spring Gala brings together
supporters for fun and fundraising.
Every fall, the Made in the Shade
Walk, Run & Roll gets Wingspan
folks moving for a good cause.
