Course overview
This course follows the guidelines of the College Board® AP Spanish Language and Culture course and provides
opportunities for students to demonstrate their proficiency in the modes of communication from the Intermediate to the
Pre-Advanced range as defined in the learning objectives in the Curriculum Framework. The three modes of
communication (Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational) defined in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning
in the 21st Century are foundational to the AP® Spanish Language and Culture course.
The AP Spanish Language and Culture course is conducted almost exclusively in Spanish. Students are strongly
encouraged to limit their conversations to Spanish upon entering the classroom. [CR1] Central to the course is the
overarching principle as stated in the Curriculum Framework:
When communicating, students in the AP Spanish Language and Culture course demonstrate
an understanding of the culture(s), incorporate interdisciplinary topics (connections), make
comparisons between the native language and the target language and between cultures
(comparisons), and use the target language in real-life settings (communities).
Although the class pulls from many sources, the primary textbook is A toda vela, (ATV) ECM Publishing (2013), with it´s
accompanying audio materials.
Daily/Weekly/Monthly Activities to address Learning Objectives





Word families – Each unit will contain specific lessons on word families to allow for morphemic analysis and
linguistic comparisons. Emphasis is also placed on regional differences in Spanish usage. [CR8]
Laboratory - Each Wednesday is set aside for lab work, where students practice simulated conversations, listen to
authentic audio and/or watch authentic audio related to the lesson theme. Emphasis is also placed on regional
accents. [CR8] [CR2a] [CR2b]
Written interpersonal and interpretive communication- Students will produce analytical or persuasive essays on
appropriate topics in reaction to materials discussed in class. The essays are evaluated for content, organization,
cultural relevancy, range and appropriateness of vocabulary, and grammatical accuracy. [CR5b] Students will
also write journal entries, letters, emails, or reactions to articles and readings presented in class. [CR3b]
Spoken Interpersonal Communication – The class is structured to include opportunities for interpersonal
speaking with native speakers. Visits from exchange students from Spain and Costa Rica provide for face to face
interactions with different accents. In addition, the class is a mix of Heritage Spanish Speakers and traditional
foreign language learners. This allows for interactions of varying speeds and accents in daily class work. [CR9]
Simulated conversations such as that used on the AP exam are used frequently. [CR3a]
Current Events - All opportunities for integration of current events will be used to allow for connections to self
and world. [CR2a] [CR2b] [CR3a] [CR6c]
