Points of View: Bacteria and Viruses
Your class will work together to show what you’ve learned about bacteria and viruses from
several different viewpoints.
1. Work in groups as assigned by your teacher. Each group will be assigned to one or two viewpoints.
2. Complete your assignment, and present your perspective to the class.
Vocabulary Define binary fission and conjugation in your own words. Then read a textbook
definition. Finally, write three sentences for each term that describes the sequence of events that
occurs during each process.
Illustrations Draw diagrams or illustrations to show how bacteria reproduce or viruses
replicate.
Observations Look at slides of bacteria under a microscope. Describe the shape of each
type of bacteria that you observe. List any other observations that you make. In complete
sentences, tell the ways in which the various bacteria are alike and different.
Calculations Find the names and sizes of several kinds of bacteria and viruses. Using your
data, on average, how much bigger are bacteria than viruses?
Details Provide details that explain how the 1918 flu was different from other strains of the
flu. Then explain whether you think this type of flu pandemic could ever occur again, and give
reasons to support your answer.
Models Use clay or other materials to make models of several bacteria and viruses. Add
labels to your models.
