Proclaiming Peace, Love, and Justice
“God created human beings in
his own image, in the image of
God he created them, male and
female he created them.”
(Genesis 1. 27)
Reflecting on the dignity of human beings, St. Catherine
of Siena asked God “What made you establish human beings
in so great a dignity? Certainly the incalculable love by which
you have looked on your creature in yourself! You are taken
with love for her; for by love indeed you created her, by love
you have given her a being capable of tasting your eternal
good.”
In our own country, the equality of human beings and
their inalienable rights are stated clearly in our Constitution
and the Bill of Rights. “All men are created equal.” But
“men” for our nation’s founders meant white males.
Recognizing every human being as equal in God’s eyes, male
and female, black and white, gay and straight, has evolved
very gradually and far too slowly over the centuries.
In a section of the Catholic Catechism on homosexuality,
the church teaches “The number of men and women who
have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible.
They do not choose their homosexual condition; for most of
them it is a trial. They must be accepted with respect,
compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust
discrimination in their regard should be avoided.” Although
as a church we disagree categorically with the recent
Supreme Court decision permitting gay marriage, we never
stop loving and wanting the best for everyone, regardless of
their sexual orientation.
Racism, sexism, and other sinful attitudes toward
human beings have their tentacles in us. They are threats
to human dignity; the dignity of every man, woman and
child- all of us who have been made in the image and
likeness of God. The creator of the universe entered into our
human history through the Son Jesus, one like us in all things
except personal sin. We did not achieve the dignity and worth
on our own. Society did not give it to us. Rather our dignity
comes from our belief that we are creatures made in the
image of the Creator.
economic consequences in our world. Pope Francis
has made this crystal-clear in his encyclical on the
environment with its focus on a special love for the
poor and marginalized.
As Catholics we are committed to safeguard and
defend human dignity. We are committed to the
promotion of human rights. We work hard to
foster unity and reconciliation among all members
of the human family.
We are made for one another, and cannot truly
live without one another. We are networked with one
another, and we have an obligation to contribute to
the good of one another so that human life can
flourish. “The earth is essentially a shared
inheritance, whose fruits are meant to benefit
everyone.” (Pope Francis)
Church teaching calls this “the common good”.
The common good are the conditions necessary for
people to live fully with one another and achieve their
own perfection as images of God.
Promoting the common good means
collaborating in eliminating whatever makes people
miserable. War, poverty, hunger and malnutrition,
persecution, discrimination and so much more, are
evils that destroy the common good. Pope St. John
Paul II used the word “solidarity” to describe the
compassionate desire to build the bonds of common
life. He described it as a “firm and persevering
determination to commit oneself to the common
good.”
Personally, we begin by recognizing the
darkness within ourselves, where sin and evil lurk.
Once we name our demons, we can begin with the
grace of God to be converted through the power of
the Holy Spirit.
Peace, Father Bruce

St. Kilian Respect Life
JUST GET OUT OF THE BOAT
During this past week, we listened to the passage in
St. Matthew’s gospel about St. Peter attempting to
walk on the water during a raging storm. When he
saw Jesus doing it he was incredulous, but asked
Jesus to let him do the same. To his credit, he did
get out of the boat and was doing fine until he realized the force of the storm. Being short on faith, he
panicked and, fearing for his life, he called out to
Jesus to save him. And then comes that most beautiful line,
“...Jesus at once stretched out His hand and
caught him.”
Peter didn’t do too well with walking on the water but
had he not given it a try he may never have realized
the saving power of Jesus’ own personal love for him.
I think of this story so often when I talk to folks who
in their hearts are pro-life but have a fear of getting
actively involved. I want to tell you that my experience in pro-life work, and I have done almost every
kind with regard to abortion, is that the grace and
strength of faith comes with the doing, as well as the
ability to love and the words that are needed to convey that love. Only love can open hearts and change
minds and bring hope and healing to those who are hurting and confused.
The culture of Death is indeed a raging storm
and the waters are deep and dark. We who are involved have felt the strong arm of Jesus around us,
and have seen it reach out over and over again to mothers in need, to bring them to safety and peace.
When Peter asked Jesus to let him walk on the
water with him Jesus simply replied, “COME”.

Parish Registration
Our new parish website is now up and running at
www.stkilian.org or www.stkilian.com.
We would like to thank Jo Wider, a parishioner,
who has for many years volunteered her services to the
parish to design and update and help us maintain our
website. The new website is filled with helpful
information about the parish and also has many
interesting videos to watch on the sacraments, vocations
etc. and also has links to many other Catholic websites
including the Vatican. It also allows you to register with
the parish online.
Many thanks also to Jerry Dubuke who also has
volunteered his services for many years to the parish to
maintain our computer server and to set-up and maintain
all the computers here in the parish offices.
Jerry Dubuke and Jo Wider are true stewards in
sharing their gifts of Time and Talent with the parish.

One of the confusing aspects of parish life is the
matter of parish registration. ”What do you mean
I am not registered; I was married here?” and many
such questions. The Catholic Church, St. Kilian
Church has doors open to all. You receive most
sacraments here; attend Mass here, live here all
your life. The parish in which you live (territorially)
is your parish. That parish has jurisdiction over
you for several matters of church life. You are to
be baptized and married in the parish in which
you reside; the parish in which you reside is called
for emergencies and sick calls. For certain things
you must go through the process of registration:
for children to attend a Catholic school or religious
education; for sponsor certificates for baptism and
confirmation; for letters of recommendation.
It can be compared to voting. You may live
in your home for generations. Here you pay your
taxes; send your children to school, shop, etc. But
to vote you must register. In the parish we need
you to register so that we know you and provide
the services you need.
How do I know if I am registered? Do you
receive parish mailings? There are two groups of
mailings: those who use the parish support
envelopes and those who do not. Those who use
them receive the mailings on a regular basis; those
who do not receive only Easter and Christmas
mailings. If you receive ne ithe r you are not
registered.
How do I register?
It is a simple matter of filling out a form which may
be picked up at the rectory office, or call the rectory
at (516)249-0127 to request a form be mailed to
your home or you can go to St. Kilian’s website at
www.stkilian.com and fill out a registration form
online and it will be submitted directly to the
rectory.
Registering helps us in the rectory to know the
parish better. How many parishioners do we have?
H ow man y ch ildre n wi ll ne e d Re l ig io us
instructions in the coming years? What is the age
of our parishioners and how do we adjust for their
needs? Who needs assistance?
PLEASE PATRONIZE OUR
SPONSORS
Let us say THANK YOU by supporting their businesses. Please let
them know that you saw their ad in our Parish Bulletin.

DIOCESAN & COMMUNITY
St. Vincent de Paul Society
In this Gospel the love that Jesus reveals through the
symbol of the cross is: self-giving, sacrificial, healing,
forgiving, in solidarity with the weak, confident in the
power of God.
During the hot summer months many of the
elderly, especially those who are sick, are not able
to find relief from the heat. Please help the
Society of St. Vincent de Paul to bring respite
and hope to them.
If you are in need of assistance or would like information
about joining or contributing to the Society, please call
516-473-9562. Leave a message and a phone number.

necesarios. (516)- 249-0127 Ext. 129 Padre Jose.
