The Galveston County Republican Party has elected a new
chairperson, Barbara Meeks. We welcome her and will give her our full
support. We all have high expectations for her ability to unify the party,
increase the number and training of precinct chairs, organize more
fundraisers, display more transparency and prepare us all for the 2012
elections. This is the big one and we had better be ready!.
“Austin: After more than 11 hours of debate, the Texas House voted
101-48 late Wednesday for a bill requiring voters to show photo ID at
the polls, increasing the likelihood that the measure will take effect in
time for the 2012 elections.”
House Republicans achieved a long-sought political goal by
passing the bill. Now they will have to iron out differences with the
version the Senate passed in January. ……Republicans say their
constituents demand the change to ensure election integrity. All votes
against the bill were by Democrats. They said the measure would
disenfranchise poor and minority voters and is targeting a problem -in-person voter fraud -- that doesn't exist. Several kinds of
government-issued photo identification would be accepted, including a
driver's license, a U.S. military ID card and a U.S. passport.

Quotes:
“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not;
nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will
not; un- rewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world
is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination are
omnipotent. The slogan press on has solved and always will solve the
problems of the human race. No person was ever honored for what he
received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave. “

Legislative Update
On the Texas Legislature's calendar, for the second week of March, is
the Third Reading of House Bill 15, authored by Sid Miller, et.al.,
relating to providing a sonogram before an abortion and providing
penalties.
On the national scene: In response to pressure from Congress, the
Obama administration is considering tapping into the United States
Strategic Oil Reserve. Skyrocketing at-the-pump prices for gasoline,
instability in the Middle East, and continued escalation of the price of a
barrel of oil were cited when White House Chief of Staff, William Daley,
said "all matters have to be on the table".
