1st Quarter English 9 Syllabus

AREAS of STUDY:
In English 9 you will work on your Reading, Writing, Speaking and Discussing skills in each of the areas
of study.
Short Stories: The Most Dangerous Game, Cinderella, The Sniper, The Cask of Amontillado, The Lamb
to Slaughter and Sorry, Right Number
 You will build on your prior knowledge of elements of plot and identify: internal and external
conflict, setting, characterization, point of view and theme.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexi
 You will read this novel and explore the themes and characters through various activities.
Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
 You will read this Shakespeare classic and investigate drama and performance skills.
Writing
 You will be writing in a number of ways throughout this quarter including: informal bellwork,
five paragraph essays and research writing.
MATERIALS:
You must bring an ENGLISH ONLY 3 ring binder with loose leaf paper, a writing utensil and your
book to class EVERYDAY!! If you come to class without the required materials, you will have to go back
to your locker and you will receive a tardy for the day.
GRADING:
Grades are available on Student Portal. A copy of my grading scale can be found on the wall by the
inbox. If you have concerns about your grade, please talk with me as soon as possible. Waiting until the
day before the quarter ends is not a good strategy.

Part of your overall grade in this class is a citizenship grade. This means you will receive points for
participating in class and for your overall attitude and professionalism.
MAKE- UP WORK:
Late work will not receive full credit. TURN YOUR WORK IN ON TIME! If you have been absent, you
must meet with me during lunch the day after you return in order to get your make-up work. I will not
explain missed course work to you during class time. Failure to do this will directly affect your grade. All

If you are absent, you receive 2 days to make up DAILY work. Large or extended projects are due on
the due date, regardless of absence for any reason.

**FYI: Academic honesty is expected in this class. Should you plagiarize any work in part or in whole,
you will be required to do an alternate assignment and will not receive full credit.

Learning Spaces will be utilized at times during the quarter. You will be responsible for the work
assigned: extensions will not be given for work assigned for LS. If there are issues during your use of
LS, you will receive a '0' for the work assigned for that day.
