MONKEY TOUR Where are the “monkeys?” The zoo’s primates live in naturalistic exhibits that mimic their homes in the wild and their correct bioclimatic zones. See the reverse side of this card for a tour of Woodland Park Zoo’s primates. Monkeys and apes are both primates. How do you tell them apart? Monkeys • have long tails • walk on palms • have arms and legs of similar length • have a deeper chest Apes • have no tails • walk using knuckles • have longer arms than legs • have a broader chest TROPICAL RAIN FOREST, inside portion 1. Golden-lion tamarins: See why these small, long-haired monkeys earned the name golden lion. TROPICAL RAIN FOREST, outside portion 2. Lemurs: These prosimians (primitive primates) are found only on the island of Madagascar. 3. Colobus monkeys: These tree-dwelling monkeys have distinctive black-and-white coloring and very long tails. 4. Gorillas: These apes are in two groups, each with several adult females and their offspring, led by a silverback (adult male). Group 1 includes a young female, born Feb. ’96, one born in 2000 and one born 2001. Group 2 includes two young females born in 1998 and a female in 2002. DAY AND NIGHT EXHIBITS 5. A variety of fascinating primates can be found in the nocturnal portion of this exhibit, including the lesser galago, night monkey, slow loris and fat-tailed dwarf lemur. TROPICAL ASIA 6. Lion-tailed macaques: These highly endangered primates use the trees as arboreal highways. 7. Siamangs: This pair of singing and swinging apes can be heard up to 5 miles away. 8. Orangutans: These highly intelligent, curious apes can be seen exploring their open forest or indoor quarters. AFRICAN SAVANNA 9. Patas monkeys: These are the fastest monkeys on land. Can you guess which is the leader of the troop? Hint: read the signs.
