8/29/11 Post-Irene Damage Observations
1. View looking downstream from the Race Hill Road Bridge (West River). This picture shows
the pooling of water in the back yard of this home.

GUILFORD — One of Guilford’s most popular and idyllic spots is facing a lengthy restoration.
Hurricane Irene ravaged the town marina at the end of Whitfield Street, making it appear as if an earthquake had hit.
Paved parking spaces lining the rock jetty are torn up, cracked and bumpy, and chunks of pavement have broken off and
left gaping holes. Large and small rocks are in the parking lot.
Two seating areas are unidentifiable, as the storm tore up the benches and picnic tables and threw them toward the water.
Part of a walkway leading to a dock separated from stairs and floated away, though it was still in the area. Another walkway
dislodged and sunk, and a truck pulled it out of the water and up the boat ramp Monday as residents watched.
The Public Works Department fenced off the area Monday afternoon, and onlookers took photos and wondered how the
nearby Grass Island shack remained intact.
“The force of water is unbelievable,” 43-year resident Bo Mooradian said while stopping by the marina. “I said, ‘Let’s go
see what happened.’ I didn’t expect this. They’re probably going to have to tear all that down.”
First Selectman Joseph Mazza said he’s not sure what will be done with the area. A town employee working at the marina
Monday said security cameras recorded the storm’s wrath, but no one has seen the footage because the power is out.

GUILFORD — Monday was a beautiful day to survey damage, and it spurred numerous residents to begin
lending a helping hand.
Kathleen Warner spent some time in the afternoon on the Green making piles of downed tree branches. She said
she worked 48 hours straight as a nurse at a local hospital and needed to get outside.
“Our Green is gorgeous, and to see it like this is devastating,” she said.
A tree had come down on one end of the Green and large branches were scattered throughout the property. A
Parks and Recreation Department crew was cleaning it up, First Selectman Joseph Mazza said.
Warner said she asked the employees what she could do to help, and they told her she could gather branches.
“I’m hoping other people will join me,” she said.
In the Mulberry Point area, Gene Schulze was shoveling sand off a street and dumping it on the abutting beach.
He lives in Tuttles Point, but his wife told him people in other neighborhoods were having trouble getting around

When asked how long he planned to go at it, he joked, “Until my back gives out.” He had already spent the
morning clearing branches around his property.

GUILFORD — Even before high tide hit, Long Island Sound waves crashed into Maria Paine’s home Sunday.
For a while, she stood near her property in Indian Cove and watched, wondering if her family’s house would
eventually be destroyed.
“It was really scary,” Paine said Monday afternoon as she surveyed the damage with neighbors. “I thought it was
going to be gone.”
Now her basement looks like a pond, seashells are scattered around her grass where the water had been a few
feet high Sunday, and a dead jellyfish is in the front yard. Neighbors’ doors and fences are strewn across what’s
left of her lawn, and the beach association dock is at the edge of her property, having floated over during the
storm.
Friends and residents stopped by Monday to offer hugs and support. Paine said the community has been “really
nice,” and she even stayed the weekend at the home of a neighbor on a hill in Indian Cove. She said she would
move back home later in the day, a plan town building officials had to approve after they inspected the house.
Now she just has to find her propane tank, the enclosure to an outdoor shower next to the deck, and her cellar
