Volume 1, Issue 1 P1 News Week at a Glance Wow, what a wild week with beautiful sunshine, snow, and rain. I don’ think the weather can make up its mind. Students have been giving their best effort the past week, even though many have been going home ill. Remember, wash those hands well and often. I am excited for this coming week with Rube Goldberg presentations. Students have surprised me in wanting to take over the publishing of our newsletter. Please hang in there with us as we take a week or two to work out the kinks! I am so proud of them. Events Mar. 14 Parent Notes Don’t forget the Camp Colman mandatory chaperone meeting coming up this Wednesday, from 6:30-7:30 in P1. Students will be taking a tour of PCMS and need to have their green form filled out and in to me by Thursday if they wish to attend. So true, we have finished our UNIT 7 math exam on Wednesday. This open response was THE 2ND HARDEST OPEN RESOPNSE IN ALL OF 5TH GRADE. We have had a fun time with exponents and negative numbers. But now it is time to move onto FRACTIONS AND RATIOS. On Monday, we had some mild confusion with the order of operations. On Tuesday, we revive our brains with some Unit 7 math. On Wednesday we surpassed THE MATH TEST. On Thursday we started comparing fractions and refreshing our memory on them, and lastly on Friday, we have encountered adding fractions and mixed numbers. After this long hardworking week, we have expanded and learnt so much, that we have even made our brain expand. Our Focus Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadow. -Helen Keller Science By Kaitlin and Will Do you know what force, motion, gravity, and friction are? What about a Rube Goldberg project? Well if you don’t, you will know by the end of this paragraph! This week in P1 we have been learning about force, motion, gravity, and friction. Suppose you are pushing a book shelf from one end of the room to the other, that would be an example of force and motion because you are using force to push the book shelf, and since the book shelf is moving, it is also an example of motion. An example of friction would be, if you were pushing a book shelf from one end of the room to the other, but the floor would be carpet. The book shelf would require more force because of friction. Friction is a force that acts when two surfaces are touching. Another example would be, it’d be easier to push a book shelf on ice than on concrete because there is less friction on ice. Also don’t forget about gravity! Gravity is the force that is keeping you and I on the ground, with out gravity who knows were we would be right now? Gravity is a force that pulls objects to the center of Earth. In addition, to all of this we have been working on Rube Goldberg projects for the last four weeks! A Rube Goldberg project is a machine with many complicated steps to do a very simple task, for example to water a plant or blow up a balloon. This ties into our education because we are learning about energy, energy transfers, Newton’s Laws of motion, etc. It is extremely complicated and we are looking forward to seeing you’re Rube Goldberg projects tomorrow and next week. That is what we have been doing in science lately. Social Studies By Brandon This week in social studies we put ourselves in an African tribal leader’s shoes. To start the week, we finished off most of our colony reports and started to break into three groups; the first group was “No Way No How No Slaves”, the second group was “Raid other tribes”, and the final group was “Sell your own criminals and slaves. We are trying to imagine the dilemma West African leaders faced when the European slave traders arrive. Throughout the week we made reasons and counter arguments for our group. Toward the end of the week, we had our test on chapter 8 for slavery. This was our week in social studies. Wow! What a fun of literacy we had! We had a fun time reading Kaddo’s Wall, an old story about a rich man named Kaddo who lost everything he had because of greed. After reading it, we also did a worksheet, we had two groups with a different questions, one which is “why did Kaddo build his wall out of flour?” and the other one which is “Why couldn’t Kaddo stop himself from eating the corn seed Sogole gave him?” We had an independent time to answer the question, and then we sat together with our groups to share our ideas and have a debate. This week we had a great time, I hope we can jump into to reading and have some more fun. All these questions were asked by Lisa the day Nilly arrived. What she didn’t know was soon SHE would be going on a wacky adventure with Nilly and Doctor Proctor also of course the fart powder. They will face many hardships which they must overcome. WILL THE FART POWDER SAVE THE DAY? This book is great if you love adventure and sequels. Though the cover is cheesy, give it a chance after all, don’t judge a book by its cover.
