KCS’s own Larry Du Savage

NEW HOME FOR KCS WILL BE THE
SHERIDAN PARK COMMUNITY CENTER
Good News!! Our club has a two-year agreement with
the Bremerton Parks and Recreation Department for a new
home in the Sheridan Park Community Center in East
Bremerton at 680 Lebo Blvd., which is on the corner of
Lebo and Claire, just off the Warren Avenue Bridge. Our
moving crew will work hard to make the move happen
following our June 15th general and board meetings, and
our first meeting at the center will be on September 21st at
10:00 a.m.
Speaking of the moving crew…I want to thank Warren
Beauchene, Don Brown, Clint Geiger, Kim Leach, Jack
Roudebush, and Doug Stauner for all of the work they have
already put into making this move happen, and I want to
also thank them in advance for the work that they still have
ahead of them. It’s a big job to make this move and I truly
appreciate the time, effort and thoughtfulness they are
putting into making a successful transition.
More good news! Lorie and Carl Kolby have stepped
up to jointly share the responsibilities of Program
Coordinator. I know that they have some great ideas about
the type of speakers that will be of interest to us and they
will do an excellent job of finding great speakers for our
monthly meetings. Thank you very much, Lorie and Carl,
for taking on this challenging, and rewarding job!
Enjoy the beginning of what looks to be a great
summer! See you at the June 15th meeting!

MINUTES OF THE GENERAL MEETING
May 18, 2015
President Chris Snow called the meeting to order at
10:00 a.m. at the Silverdale Community Center. There
were 44 members who signed in for the meeting. She
asked that all cell phones be turned off. Lorie Kolby
led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag
of the United States.
Chris welcomed all members and asked if there
were any visitors or new members present. None
present. There were no changes to the minutes of the
last meeting, as published. The treasurer's report was
accepted, subject to audit. KCS has $4,718.46 in
checking and $12,527.06 in savings. ($1,682.71 New
Horizons and $10,844.35 KCS savings).
Chris stated there was a need for a Program
Director before September's meeting. Also, one
additional Trustee is needed to fill out the Board.
A large coffee pot is needed for KCS so Chris
made a request for members to check garage sales,
Craig's List or other possibilities to find one. If anyone
can find one, the group will reimburse them for the
cost.
Chris stated there is a free color printer available
that the group no longer uses and anyone wanting it
could help themselves.
June 15th will be our last meeting in the Evergreen
Room. Chris announced our new home will be at the
Sheridan Park Community Center. It is located on the
corner of Lebo and Clare Ave. in East Bremerton. She
showed pictures of the facility and our new meeting
room. Chairs and tables will be set up for us each
meeting. There is a small kitchen area to the side with
plenty of storage area for kitchen supplies. There is a
Conference Room for meetings that has a mini kitchen
area. Parking is available at an upper lot for 20 spaces,
a small area in front of the building and parking on
Lebo. The Sheridan Village next door has plenty of
room to park also. We have a two-year contract. We
will have free use of the facility and will partner with
them on one mutually-agreed-upon, shared project per
year for each year. Discussed already is wiring for WiFi to the Conference Room.
All keys to the Evergreen Room facility need to be
turned in by the next meeting.
Dwayne Davis, from Silverdale Staples,(left) advised
us about internet safety, while Loran Kelly, MicroSoft Representative demonstrated the latest products
from Microsoft.
Chris reported KCS received $520.00 in donations
during the Great Give. They will know the final tally
by mid-June when the bonus pool funds are added to
the donations.
Mary Krotzer introduced the speakers, Loran
Kelley from Microsoft and Dwayne Davis from
Staples in Silverdale. Loran started with saying he
would answer any questions anyone might have
during the presentation. He said he would speak about
the new Surface Pro 3, Windows 10, Microsoft Band,
and Windows I phones and anything about Microsoft
products.
Windows 10, free with the Surface Pro 3. 3 vs 2, is
46% faster. It has a 10x8 screen and is a full blown
computer with an Adam Processor and 10 hours video
battery life. The Pro will do anything that a PC can do,
including pictures and videos. It comes with a pen you
can use to write, draw and cad, and all are erasable.
The Pro 3 ranges in price from $799.00 up to
$1,899.00. Memory can be added to it and it has a
USB docking station and a wireless display adapter.
Loran showed a video on new technology from
Microsoft that demonstrated building holograms with
a Micro HoloLens that will work with windows 10.
Microsoft will be replacing Internet Explorer. On their
new product you will be able to write on the web page
and then save it.

SIGS - Don said his group has had their last meeting

program coordinating together.

read the letter received from Bremerton Parks and
Recreation Department Director, Wyn Birkenthal,
regarding the two-year contract and the agreement to

to executing the agreement. This would be similar to
an in-kind donation. Internet needs to be installed in
the Conference Room which possibly would be the
first year’s shared project. Sheridan expects us to
move in on the afternoon of June 15th. Space is
available to store our podium. A calendar for KCS
has been given to Sheridan regarding all our activities
through March 2016.

divided into what we'll take over to Sheridan and what
can be put in our storage unit.

storage, supplies, or repairs at the new facility. Abel
volunteered to explore possibilities for finding a used
locker on Craig's List, at a used office supply, or at
other venues.
Pat and Marlene will have their truck at the next
meeting, June 15th, and all the kitchen items will be
taken over to the Sheridan location after the Board
meeting. At that time, everything we need to transfer
to the Sheridan location will be moved out of the
Evergreen storage room and taken to Sheridan Park by
car or truck.
Good of the Order - Abel said the classes at the
Goodwill are scheduled and good for September. He

MEET NEW KCS BOARD MEMBER
THELMA GURSKE-TAYLOR
Also in advanced Technology, Loran showed how the
Microsoft Health Band works. You will be able to track
burning calories, in-depth observations regarding
exercise programs and monitoring your heart rate. It can
track your sleeping quality and much more. With apps, it
will work with your phone and you can talk with it,
receive emails and personalize it. Before turning the
program over to Dwayne Davis, Loran answered several
questions.
Dwayne Davis handed out a document titled, “Where
do they hide? How to avoid them!” Also available was a
Federal Trade Commission pamphlet, “Taking charge.
What to do if your identity is stolen”. On the first page
of the document, it showed the Yahoo home page. Only
two of the seven choices were real. Dwayne stated that
advertising and re-directs can result in malicious
malware attacks. The document included the sites for the
known top 60 very severe malicious software programs.
Dwayne said to avoid pop-ups and if you have connected
with one you believe is unsafe, go to Start and restart
your computer before continuing on.
Both Loran and Dwayne answered several questions
at the end of their presentations. Loran stated that
Microsoft will NEVER call you on the phone. Also, if
you call Microsoft for Tech Support, you will be talking
to someone in the USA.
Dwayne Davis works for Staples in Silverdale. His
phone # is 360-307-0777 or you can reach him by email
at: [email protected].
Chris thanked Loran and Dwayne for their
presentation and asked them to stay for lunch. They
would be available to answer any more questions
afterwards.
Chris reminded everyone that Larry DuSavage will
be our June 15th speaker, talking about Windows 10.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:10 AM for the
potluck and the 50/50 raffle drawing.

I am a native Bremertonian who was raised in rural
Navy Yard City with its little two-room schoolhouse and
limited access. It was an area rich with livestock and
open space before the wartime population explosion.
I graduated from Bremerton High in 1945, the last
double-shifted class to accommodate the bulging student
body. For four years, my classes were 8:00-12:00, so I
worked afternoons and weekends, mostly in the Navy
Yard (PSNY then), but I also tried my hand as a
switchboard operator for Ma Bell and a salesclerk at
Woolworths. In my senior year, I earned school credit
for office work in the Yard’s Administration Building.
My position became fulltime after graduation, but it
disappeared overnight in August with the Japanese
Surrender. So, I became a bookkeeper at the National
Bank of Washington, then a loan-window clerk. It was a
good move, as I met my future husband, Gene Gurske,
through a fellow employee.
We married in 1947, and when our three children
were all in school, I decided I wanted to be a teacher.
With a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education, I
started my career in South Kitsap, but finished in
Bremerton. In 1976, the Year of the Bicentennial, my
teaching partner at Crownhill Elementary and I, with the
help of a student teacher and wonderful parents, held a
Colonial Classroom each Friday to celebrate the
Bicentennial. We were featured in the Bremerton Sun
and reprinted nationwide by Associated Press. A Seattle
class, also in colonial attire, came for a day with their
lunch tins in hand to join in the fun, and a class back east
donated money to help us with expenses. It’s hard to
believe that I gave up the fun of teaching at age 55, but
Gene and I had 20 years of active retirement before I lost
him in 2002.
Now I’ve lost my second husband, Don Taylor. Life
is so unpredictable! I’m working to finish my life’s story
for my granddaughter, but when I think I can print it, the
ending changes!

Type characters in Word by using Unicode
Adapted from http://office.microsoft.com/en-ca/word-help/type-characters-by-using-unicode-and-code-page-valuesHP003084929.aspx (no longer available)
If you know the Unicode or code page (hexadecimal) value of a character, you can use the ALT+X keyboard
shortcut to enter the character directly in your document.
Identifying the Unicode or code page value of a character
If the character you want to type is already in a Word document, you can identify its Unicode or code page
value by using the ALT+X keyboard shortcut, as follows:


To identify the Unicode value, place the insertion point to the right of the character, and then press
ALT+X. The character is replaced by its Unicode value. Press ALT+X again to switch back to the
character.
To identify the code page value, type x to the left of the character, place the insertion point to the right
of the character, and then press ALT+X. The character is replaced by its code page value. Repeat the
process to switch back to the character.
If the character you want to type is not already in a Word document, you can identify its Unicode or code page
value by opening the Symbol dialog box, as follows:
1. On the Insert menu, click Symbol.
2. On the Symbols tab, locate the character you want to use.
3. Note the value in the Character code box when the from box displays Unicode (hex) and when the
from box displays ASCII (hex). These are the Unicode and code page values for the character,
respectively.
Note For some operating systems, such as the U.S. English version of Windows XP, the ASCII (hex) and
Unicode (hex) values are the same.
Typing a character by using its Unicode value
1. Type the Unicode (hexadecimal) value of the character.
Note The value string can also begin with U+.
2. Press ALT+X.
Microsoft Word replaces the string to the left of the insertion point with the character you specified.

Copy and paste multiple items by using the Office Clipboard
Adapted from https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Copy-and-paste-multiple-items-by-using-the-Office-Clipboard-714a72af-1ad4450f-8708-c2931e73ec8a?CorrelationId=5e59c6a7-9e1c-4764-a320-8fec2971166a&ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US
The Microsoft Office Clipboard allows you to copy up to 24 multiple text and graphical items from any Office
program document and paste them into the same, and/or another, Office program document. The Office Clipboard
works with the standard Copy and Paste commands. Just copy an item to the Office Clipboard to add it to your
collection, and then paste it from the Office Clipboard into any Office document at any time. Up to 24 collected
items stay on the Office Clipboard until you exit all Office programs or you delete the items from the Clipboard
task pane.
After you exit all Office programs, only the last item that you copied stays on the Office Clipboard. When you exit
all Office programs and restart your computer, the Office Clipboard is cleared of all items.
The Office Clipboard and the system Clipboard
The Office Clipboard is related to the system Clipboard in Microsoft Windows in the following ways:



When you copy multiple items to the Office Clipboard, the last item that you copy is always copied to the
system Clipboard.
When you clear the Office Clipboard, the system Clipboard is also cleared.
When you use the Paste command, the Paste button, or the keyboard shortcut CTRL+V, you paste the
contents of the system Clipboard, not the Office Clipboard.
Turn on the Office Clipboard - Word

On the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click the Clipboard Dialog Box Launcher.
Copy multiple items to the Office Clipboard



Open the file that you want to copy items from.
Select the first item that you want to copy.
On the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click Copy (or press CTRL+C).
Continue copying items from the same or other files until you have collected all of the items that you want. The
Office Clipboard can hold up to 24 items. If you copy a twenty-fifth item, the first item on the Office Clipboard is
deleted.
Paste items
You can paste items from the Office Clipboard individually or all at the same time.
1. Click where you want the items to be pasted. You can paste collected items into any Office program.
2. Do one of the following:
o To paste items one at a time, in the Clipboard task pane, double-click each item that you want to
paste.
o To paste all the items that you copied, in the Clipboard task pane, click Paste All.
Click the URL above to see the steps to use for the other Office programs – Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint,
Publisher, and SharePoint Designer.
