Pre-IB English 9 Summer Reading 2013 Hello Pre-IB English 9 students! Pre-IB English 9 promises to be a rigorous, yet rewarding course. We hope you are looking forward to next year as much as we are. To prepare you for the course, we would like you to complete ONE of the following summer reading assignments: 1. Read Ender’s Game. You will be working with this text in class so having your own copy is preferable. Any edition of the novel is fine. Take notes on the major events and the characters of the story. Bring your notes during the first week of class. Please do not download any notes from the internet. 2. Answer ONE of the following essay prompts using Ender’s Game. The prompts are modified IB Exam release questions and should be answered in NO MORE THAN 2 pages. Have your responses ready to hand in on the SECOND day of school. “Traditionally, the hero somehow represents the community and carries with him its hopes and fears.” Consider to what extent and to what effect this statement is true for Ender’s Game. 1. In your introductory paragraph, state the title (underline it) and author. Also, state and explain the quote. 2. In your first body paragraph, provide specific events that show that Ender represents or does not represent the hopes of the community throughout the novel. Remember to begin your paragraph with a topic sentence. 3. In your second paragraph, provide specific events that show that Ender represents the fears or does not represent the fears of the community throughout the novel. Remember to begin your paragraph with a topic sentence. 4. In your concluding paragraph, summarize your major points which show that Ender is or is not the hero of his community. OR Select what you believe is a significant quote from the novel. Then show how it resonates throughout the novel. 1. In your introductory paragraph, state the title (underline it) and author. Also, state and explain the meaning of the quote. 2. In each body paragraph, provide an event that shows the meaning of the quote. Be sure to connect the event to the meaning of the quote in each paragraph. 3. In your concluding paragraph, summarize the points you are making that connect to the quote. Enjoy your summer and take the time to do things you will not have time for once school starts again. The upcoming year will be a challenging one, but also rewarding and beneficial and maybe at times, fun. Enjoy your summer assignments, take the time to do them well, and if you have any questions or comments during the summer, please do not hesitate to email us at [email protected] or [email protected]. Sincerely, Audrey Starr Kishanna L. Harley
