V E N U E You can easily reach the venue from all accommodations using public transport which is free during tournament days. Otherwise, a single ticket is 10HRK, which is around 1.50€. Alternatively, you can use cabs to get around. A cab ride in one direction is around 8€/ 2€ per person if 4 people take the cab. 4|Page WHO - INFO PACK DRESS CODE Dress code for the tournament is business or smart casual. If you’re wondering what that means, we invite you Google the term or visit this incredibly informative blog with pictures included :) While we do appreciate fashion know-how, here is our favourite description of the style: A C T I V I T I E S FLAGS, EMBLEMS, MASCOTS We absolutely encourage it and invite you to bring a country/school/organisation flag, emblem or a mascot (a picture of your coach perhaps? we will have a photo printer at hand) you can proudly display during your debates. ACTIVITIES WHO is a pretty intense tournament, but that does not mean you are not supposed to have any fun. We have two age-appropriate social events planned on Friday and Saturday evening. ADVENT IN ZAGREB – FRIDAY EVENING, 16.12. Based on previous experience in organizing the tournament during Advent in Zagreb, the winner of “Best Christmas Market in Europe” title, participants want to see what all the fuss is about and Friday evening is when you’ll have the chance to do that. We encourage you to explore the Advent in Zagreb web page as well as our map to see what you’re interested in. If you want to explore on your own, that’s fine – if you’d like some help, our volunteers can accompany you on your Zagreb adventure, but please make sure to request a volunteer during registering at the school on Friday. 5|Page WHO - INFO PACK COUNTRY EXPO & BREAK ANNOUNCEMENT – SATURDAY EVENING, 17.12. WHO 2016 will host participants from 18 countries so on Saturday evening you will have a chance to showcase your culture, food, drinks (non alcoholic) and other interesting things about your respective countries to other tournament participants. Country Expo will take place at the tournament venue and will start at 20:30 so please bring some national foodstuff, flags, souvenirs and different knickknacks with you when you depart from your accommodation to the school on Saturday morning. If you are bringing food, there will be refrigerators available in all accommodation venues and at the school. You can also count on the help of our volunteers in finding everything you need in Zagreb (within a reasonable scope of things you could need). Every delegation will have a stand available to present their country. If there are several nationalities represented within a delegation, feel free to set up joint tables or represent your country on a separate table. A C T I V I T I E S The break will be announced at the Expo. 6|Page WHO - INFO PACK WHO 2016 TIME TABLE 16.12.2016. – Friday Arrivals 14:30 - 15:30 - Arrival to venue and registration 16:00 - Opening ceremony 16:30 - Adjudicators workshop 17:10 – 18:30 – Round 1 18:30 – 20:00 - Round 2 T I M E T A B L E 20:00 – 21:00 – Dinner 21:00 – 22:30 – Advent in Zagreb 17.12.2016. – Saturday 09:00 – 11:10 – Round 3 - impromptu 11:40 - 14:00 - Round 4 - impromptu 14:00 – 15:30 - Lunch 15:30 – 17:10 – Round 5 17:40 – 19:20 – Round 6 19:30 – 20:30 - Dinner 20:30 – 22:00 Country Expo / Break announcement 18.12.2016. – Sunday 08:00 - 09:15 - Octo-finals 09:30 - 11:30 - Quarterfinals 12:00 - 14:00 - Semi-finals 14:00 - Lunch 16:00 - Grand Final & closing ceremony 7|Page WHO - INFO PACK GETTING AROUND ZAGREB G E N E R A L Our volunteers can help you get from your accommodation to the tournament venue and viceversa. TRAMS: Trams are Zagreb’s favourite and easiest to use form of public transport. Tram and bus tickets are the same – they are one-way tickets, cost 10 kuna (a little under 1,50€) and can be bought on all newspaper stands or in the trams and buses themselves. TAXI: Using taxis in Zagreb has become relatively cheap in recent years. Taxi fare from city centre to the airport should be around 150 HRK or 20€, and taxi fare from city centre to the tournament venue should be around 60 HRK or 8€ per cab. There are three main Taxi companies and a lot of individual cabbies operating in Zagreb. We strongly recommend using the companies with their cars clearly marked. Other service providers have been known to cheat passengers and offer them higher prices. These are the three main tax organisations: I N F O R M A T I O N TAXI CAMMEO http://www.taxi-cammeo.net/index.php?lang=en phone number: 00 385 1212 If using this company make sure this is written on the car. There have been instances of "fake" cars with for instance writings Taksi - Cameleon. EKO TAXI http://www.ekotaxi.hr/index_en.html phone number: 00 385 060 77 77 or 00 385 1414 Due to their specific look and majority of cars being Toyota Prius there are no known "fakes" or issues with this company. We highly recommend using them (save the trees!), plus you can order online. RADIO TAXI ZAGREB http://www.radio-taksi-zagreb.hr/ phone number: 00 385 1777 or 00 385 060 800 800 Important note: If you are going to use Radio Taxi Zagreb take note on the "color" of their marking. Yellow means they have been caught cheating on fares (funny but true) so ride at your own peril. Blue means all is ok so try using only those. They should have a large bluish sticker on their side. 8|Page WHO - INFO PACK G E N E R A L UBER We support debate motions on whether Uber is running an evil exploitation of workers or a freedom based future of the economy. For the purposes of your stay in Zagreb, you might want to know that Uber is available in Zagreb. FOOD, BARS, STORES AND COFFEE PLACES First off, remember that breakfast will be served at your accommodation, while both lunch and dinner will be provided at the tournament venue so you will not have to use a lot of restaurants. Regardless of that, you might want to try some local food. Zagreb has a large number of local fast food establishment, small bistros and big old fashioned restaurants. On top of that, you’re visiting Zagreb during Advent and will notice that the centre of the city is full of little stands offering different kinds of traditional food, drinks and sweets. You don’t have to worry – all food sold on the streets of Zagreb is perfectly safe. I N F O R M A T I O N There are several "hubs" for restaurants in Zagreb such as Masarykova, Teslina, Tkalčićeva and Skalinska Street and you will find all sorts of food within 15 min walk between these places. Cafés, bars and restaurants are mainly open after midnight, but you’ll notice that shops and markets are not and close around 8 pm. We recommend you do your shopping before that. Apart from a couple of kiosks, there’s an underground supermarket open 24/7 at the main train station (and it’s way less scary than it sounds). We are providing you with a map of supermarket-type stores and coffee places in vicinity of the hotels and the hostels. As you can see, there is quite a choice of such establishments and you will not have a problem of finding any of these anywhere in Zagreb. Drugs Drugs (marijuana included) are not legal; possession or use of all narcotics in any quantity is a criminal offence. 10 | P a g e WHO - INFO PACK SAFETY G E N E R A L Zagreb is in general a very safe city with a very low (practically non-existent) level of violent crimes, especially towards foreign tourists. There are no unsafe parts of the city or parts in which extra precaution is warranted so feel free to move around and explore the city. As for some general safety tips for you should observe normal caution, avoid dark parks or unlighted streets during night if you’re on your own, do not leave your things unattended in public places and try to organise your belongings as to avoid pick pocketing etc. There are no recorded terrorist threats in Croatia. During the winter holiday period use of pyrotechnics such as fireworks and firecrackers is extensive. One should not get alarmed by this and use normal caution in these situations, which is basically avoid people/groups doing stupid things with firecrackers if you happen to come across them. We propose this as a general rule of thumb outside of Croatia also. Carrying a form of ID is legally required for all people above age of 16. You should carry a driving licence, passport or a regular ID on your person at all times outside of your accommodation. Since the tournament is a large public gathering, we are obliged to have security officers at the school with us. THE REFUGEE CRISIS I N F O R M A T I O N We would like to mention couple of key facts about refugee/migrants crisis and its impact on Croatia. So far there have been over 500.000 people who passed through Croatia in the last year. Despite this large number there have been zero crimes or acts of violence towards Croatian people or people on the streets of Croatian cities recorded connected to the refugees/migrants. Only 18 people have requested asylum so far - all of the others have moved on to Hungary or Slovenia on their way to western or northern Europe. Granted, this speaks volumes about the state of Croatian economy, but this is a discussion better left for a different time (the socials maybe?). The refugee corridor through the region is currently closed. THE WEATHER The weather in Zagreb can be quite unstable in December. So far we had sunny and cool and rainy and freezing, this year it looks like partially sunny and freezing with temperatures between 5 and 3°C. Remember to pack warm clothes and footwear suitable for rain or snow. If you’re thinking about whether you should pack that extra scarf or sweater, pack it! Nothing worse than freezing half to death mid-Christmas market. As expected in long term forecast, please check for updates before you leave for Zagreb. 11 | P a g e WHO - INFO PACK IMPORTANT NUMBERS 112 - Emergency number G E N E R A L Accommodation: +385 1 4843 720 Hotel Garden (4*), Vodnikova 13 +385 1 4841 122 Hotel Central (3*), Ulica kneza Branimira 3 +385 1 5510 517 Hostel Bureau, Trpimirova 4/1 +385 1 5552 707 Hostel Funk Lodge, Rendićeva 28B +385 1 4004 248 Swanky Mint Hostel, Ilica 50 +385 1 77 93 760 Hostel Chic, Pavla Hatza 10 Organisers: + 385 91 575 1029 - Anastazija + 385 91 1317 601 - Bojan Eko Taxi: 00 385 060 77 77 or 00 385 1414 I N F O R M A T I O N Official currency: Croatian Kuna, Hrvatska Kuna or HRK (not Euros!)
