MAYOR DE BLASIO’S APPROVAL RATING SOARS,
QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL FINDS;
HE TOPS LITTLE-KNOWN CHALLENGERS 3-1
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has a 60 – 34 percent job approval rating, his highest score
ever, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.
This is a 10-percentage point jump since a 50 – 42 percent approval in a February 28, 2017,
survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. The February score was de
Blasio’s first positive job approval rating in a year.
New York City voters say 57 – 35 percent that de Blasio deserves to be reelected, also the
highest score ever.
White voters still disapprove 55 – 39 percent of the job the mayor is doing, but approval
among black voters is 80 – 12 percent, with Hispanic voter approval at 70 – 27 percent.
De Blasio buries two declared Republican challengers by margins of 3-1:


63 – 21 percent over Paul Massey;
64 – 21 percent over State Assembly member Nicole Malliotakis.
New York City voters give de Blasio a 58 – 34 percent favorability rating. His Republican
opponents are little known, as 81 percent don’t know enough about Massey to form an opinion of
him and 84 percent don’t know enough about Malliotakis.
“Remember all those news stories about how Mayor Bill de Blasio was in political trouble?
Well, he ain’t,” said Maurice Carroll, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
“The mayor’s two reputed opponents are unknown and he ranks high on the poll’s
standard traits and most of the standard issues.
“Stay tuned for a slam-bang mayoral election – four years from now.
“Four-fifths of New Yorkers haven’t heard enough about Paul Massey or Nicole
Malliotakis to decide whether they like them or not.”

A total of 62 percent of New York City voters are “very satisfied” or “somewhat
satisfied” with the way things are going in the Big Apple, while 37 percent are “somewhat
dissatisfied” or “very dissatisfied.”
This is the highest satisfaction rate since a 65 – 35 percent score in a January 17, 2013,
Quinnipiac University poll.
Looking at de Blasio’s personal qualities, voters say:



56 – 39 percent that he has strong leadership qualities;
59 – 37 percent that he understands their problems;
59 – 31 percent that he is honest and trustworthy.
Voters approve 57 – 30 percent of the way de Blasio is handling relations between
blacks and whites and approve 46 – 37 percent of how he is handling the city budget. But the
mayor gets a negative 39 – 44 percent approval for his handling of political corruption.
President Trump’s Approval
New York City voters disapprove 74 – 22 percent of the job President Donald Trump is
doing. Republicans approve 75 – 18 percent. All other listed party, gender, borough, and
racial groups disapprove by huge margins.
Even voters in traditionally Republican Staten Island disapprove of President Trump
57 – 40 percent.
By an even wider 79 – 12 percent, New York City voters do not want their native son
president to spend more time in the city. Even Republicans say stay away 61 – 26 percent.
Approval ratings for other officials are:


69 – 25 percent for Gov. Andrew Cuomo;


49 – 18 percent for Public Advocate Letitia James;
44 – 18 percent for City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.
55 – 18 percent for City Comptroller Scott Stringer;
From May 10 – 16, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,019 New York City voters with a
