General Guidelines




Please come to the theater with your hair and makeup (except lipstick) completed. It is recommended to
wear a “color-last” lipstick. If you use this, you may put the lipstick on your dancer before coming to the
theater.
If using a regular lipstick, please bring it in a marked bag. (lipstick will go on after the costume is on)
Please buy inexpensive lipstick because it can easily be lost. There are some very good long-wear, nonsmudge lipsticks on the market. These lipsticks go on to last and will only be removed with makeup
remover. You can apply this type of lipstick before entering the theater if you prefer rather than sending
the lipstick backstage.
False eyelashes are required for the older girls. Your teacher will instruct you on whether your dancer
needs them or not.
Please make sure your dancer does not have any temporary tattoos. They will be removed.
No nail polish.
No underwear.
No jewelry.
No glitter.
No hair accessories or bun wraps other than hair colored hairnets.
Make up
There are some very good online tutorials for stage make up. The best one we have found is by New York City
Ballet Soloist, Kathryn Morgan. Here is the link to her stage make up tips:

Powder Foundation
Brow pencil/matte light brown eye shadow
Medium brown eye shadow
Light shimmery eye shadow
Black liquid eyeliner
False black eyelashes
Dark pink lipstick (lip liner - optional)
Deep pink blush (not bright)
How to apply stage makeup:

Start out with an all-over foundation, a powder is recommended, that matches the skin tone.

Fill in the eyebrows with a matching brow pencil, a matte eye shadow can also work. Defining the
brows will help in the definition of the eyes. (Just don’t overdo it!)

Apply a medium brown eye shadow to the lid and crease of the eye. On the brow bone (the area above
the eyelid) apply a light shimmery shadow. The light shimmery color should reflect off of the brow in be
a light shade of cream or pink.

Next use black liquid eyeliner. “Wings” should be drawn just under the eye and along the top of the eye
that extend past the outside corner of the eye. Start the bottom line at the midpoint of the eye and
make sure the wings don’t connect at the end.

Now it’s time to apply the false eyelashes. Practice makes perfect girls!! After lashes are on and dry,
blend natural lashes and the false with a coat of black mascara.

Now apply the dark pink lipstick. The lipstick should be a shade darker than your natural lip color.

Finish up with a brush of a deep pink blush on the apples of the cheeks.
