At the end of the story Dave is proud of his father because he sees that he is a moral man who works hard. b. I chose this TK because I explained the effects the lessons Waverly's mother taught her had on Waverly. 10) a. Waverly and her mother try to manipulate each other like chess players. He admired Chris so much that he thought that if Chris said Joe was innocent and Steve was guilty it had to be true. b. I chose this TK because George looked up to Chris and respected his opinion since they were young boys. 15) a. Keller means that there is nothing more important than family. He wants Anne to understand that her father should be more important to her than Chris and that she should support him even though he committed a crime. b. When George and Anne learned of their father's crime and that 21 pilots died as a result of it they refused to have contact with him and didn’t visit him in jail. In both Nazi Germany and the school the people followed a charismatic leader. In the school it was dangerous to opposed the Wave- Laurie was even threatened for it. In Nazi Germany people who opposed the Nazi party were imprisoned or executed. b. I chose this TK because I compared between the Wave movement and the Nazi party. 20) a. We can infer that the Wave is becoming a dangerous movement that uses violence against people who oppose it. b. At the beginning of the story Laurie and David are very close. The Wave comes between them because David supports it and Laurie opposes it. Only at the end when David realizes that the Wave is dangerous they become close again. 5 Part III- Bridging Text and Context 21) Mr. Know All\ W. Somerset Maugham The quote says that to understand a person's character you must observe him for a long time. Even though the people in Mr. Know All are on the ship for only fourteen days, they spend most of their time together. The narrator at first considers Mr. Kelada to be a self-centered showoff. Mrs. Ramsay he sees as charming and modest. But the narrator understands what both of them are really like after he sees the look on Mrs. Ramsay's face during the discussion about the pearls and after he hears Mr. Kelada lie about the pearls to save her. He understands that Mr. Kelada cares about others and is not self-centered, and that Mrs. Ramsay isn't honest, because she lied to her husband. 21) The Enemy\ Pearl S. Buck In "The Enemy," Sadao's first reaction is to behave like many Japanese at the time would have behaved, and throw the wounded POW back into the sea. However, because he is a doctor who was educated in the United States, Sadao has learned some of the values that the group of nations described in the quote accepted. Therefore, he feels it is his duty to treat the POW well and to save him. His wife in the end agrees with him. Sadao's servants, like most Japanese, insist that the POW should die. 6
