Changes to Serology and Parasitology Charges
for Incoming Mice and Rats
In order to prevent the inadvertent introduction of disease into rat and mouse
colonies at Purdue University, rats and mice shipped to Purdue from a nonapproved source are placed into the rodent quarantine facility upon arrival. A
non-approved source of rodents includes any institution outside of Purdue
University such as another university, college, research company or foundation. Rats and mice are typically held in the quarantine facility for at least 6
weeks and then retested for rodent pathogens or rederived by the Transgenic
Mouse Core Facility prior to entry into regular facility housing.
The cost of performing additional serology and parasitology on the mice and
rats in quarantine has been absorbed by the Laboratory Animal Program for
some time. Starting immediately, any testing charges for NEW arrivals to rodent quarantine will be charged back to the Principle Investigators per diem
account. This does not apply to rodents currently housed in rodent quarantine
only for new arrivals. The current cost for sampling one rodent for serology
and parasitology is $154.00. The actual amount to be charged will depend upon the number of animals needing to be tested to reflect the health of the
group of arriving rodents.
Please contact the Laboratory Animal Program office [email protected] or
49163) with any questions pertaining to this change in procedure.

Hazardous Substances Used in Animal Research
PACUC has been informed recently of instances where hazardous substances are
being injected into animals without properly identifying the cages, so that animal
care staff and others who are exposed are aware of what has been used. If you
are using a hazardous substance as part of your animal research, you must mark
the cage with the name of the hazardous substance being used and inform
animal care staff of any special handling required when bedding is disposed. If
you have any questions as to whether the substance you are using is considered
hazardous, please contact the PACUC office at [email protected].
UPDATED !!!
General Guidelines and Deadlines for Animal Ordering
In general, we will process complete animal orders within one business day of receipt in our office. Therefore, if you submit your order on noon Thursday, it will be processed by noon on Friday. Keep in mind, they must be complete, with the
facility manager’s signature, appropriate business office approval, and PI (or their representative) signature. There is always the chance that, at any one of the above points, there may be a time delay, so it is suggested to get your orders
started as early as possible so that a delay at any signature point will not cause a delay in your order.
*Please note that currently Jackson Lab delivers on both Tuesday and Thursday.
For these commonly used vendors, here is the ordering schedule:

Do you sometimes struggle with your new
appointment of working with in vivo research?
Are your research animals happy? Are you treating
them with the upmost respect and compassion?
Researchers who are the most compassionate and caring towards their
animal subjects end up designing the best studies and getting the best
data possible! Let’s think about it for a moment… If you are a very compassionate person toward your animals, and really care about them, you
will do better science! You will make sure you design your study to utilize
the least number of animals yet just enough to gather statistical significance to show the variation needed. You take the time to think through
every step of the process and even do a pilot project just to make certain
that all your ideas are going to work. You are very organized and meticulous - planning every detail and calculating supplies and equipment needed. You make sure that you have additional helpers and any training
needed prior to beginning the study. You should ask questions, and you
should NEVER be afraid to ask for help! All this planning is to ensure that
your animals have a smooth procedure. You know that they will be taken care of to the highest level possible and you will be able to gather all
the data possible needed for your experiment. I am only one person, but
I am just a phone call away. If you ever find yourself in a position that
makes you uncomfortable, or overwhelmed, please feel free to contact
me! 765-494-2521 Carol.
…All
this because you care…
