On Friday the 13th of January
Iveagh Primary School hosted its
highly successful Quare Character
Day. It was a beautiful day, a clear
blue sky and the sun shining down
on everyone. Crowds of people supported the school and we are certain everyone had an enjoyable
time visiting the rooms. Pupils, and
many teachers, dressed up in creative and funny costumes with the
winners from each class shown in
the photograph below. The class
theme in Mrs Hutchinson's Reception room was ‘Bears’ and Mrs
McKinney's Primary 1 class entertained us with ‘Nursery Rhymes’.
The Primary 2 classrooms focused
on Julia Donaldson books while Mrs
Little’s room brought everyone
back to their younger years and
reminded us of Fairy Tales we
loved to read. Primary 4 study the
author Anthony Browne with Primary 5 looking at Roald Dahl. Primary
6 challenged us with a non-fiction
theme while we learned lots about
the Titanic and John Pepper from
the Primary 7’s. Visitors were given the opportunity to listen to the
choir and browse through displays
and stalls in the assembly hall.
Once again Iveagh hosted another
amazing themed day and we look
forward to seeing the next one!

Christmas Carol Service
by Emilie Moffett & Rebecca Magill
Photographs by Ellie Heenan & Lydia Boyd
On Friday 16th December, Iveagh Christmas Carol Service
started off with a bang when Primary 6 sang a song called
This is the Time and the Season. It was a truly fantastic
opening to the show and enjoyed by all. The Primary 2 children
followed on from this, looking like lovely angels, as they sang
One Starry Night. Everybody thought Reception and Primary
1 were so cute when they started to sing Sleepy Shepherd
and Five Woolly Sheep. Primary 4 awakened the audience with
the song Little Donkey and reminded us about the true meaning of Christmas with their poem entitled They are Waiting. This was accompanied
with beautiful actions. After this Primary 5 sang We have Followed the Star and
said a brilliant poem called High in the Heaven. Following that Primary 3 bumped up
and down with the song Bumpy Road. Primary 7 girls and boys sang Love Shone Down
and were accompanied by the school choir. Then the Primary 7 class sang their
hearts out with Sing out at Christmas. In between all of this the Primary 7 children
performed a beautiful play and narrated throughout. With such a big turn out of visitors we managed to raise £313.87 for the Make a Wish Foundation. Our thanks go
to all who contributed.

Our web site has proved to be highly successful
and has had over 2000 visitors since its launch
last spring. It has all the information you need
about things happening around the school. The
website provides copies of recent letters and
dinner menus, just in case you have misplaced
them! It is updated regularly for you to see the
exciting things happening in the school. There
are photographs to look through including the
Primary 5 visit to the farm, the Primary 4 trip to
the F.E. McWilliam Gallery in Banbridge, the
Christmas Carol Service and our recent Quare
Character Day. If you are feeling nostalgic you
can have a look through archive photographs
and see if you can spot yourself in any old photographs. The video clips are what makes the
website unique and special. They demonstrate
some of the things taught at school so that parents can reinforce learning with their children
at home. Keep visiting www.iveaghps.co.uk and
let us know what you think.

Playground Fun
By Ellie Heenan
At the end of term one Iveagh Primary
School got some new playground equipment
which is located between the two playgrounds. This equipment has been funded by
the Extended Schools Scheme organised by
Mrs. Hutchinson. The equipment includes a
play house, sand tray, water tray, a mini
tractor and trailer, a balance beam, climbing
net, steeping stones, a drain pipe game and
butterfly blackboards. The new equipment
will be timetabled for break and lunch time
so that every child in the school will have an
opportunity to play on it but it is primarily
being used by our younger classes during
play time. They are certainly enjoying themselves and it has been a very worthwhile addition to our playground.

An Interview with Mrs. Bingham
By Jenna McDowell and Siân Cochrane
Here are a few questions that we asked Mrs. Bingham
What is your favourite musical instrument?
A really difficult question to answer! I enjoy playing the piano but I love the sound of the saxophone, an instrument I’d love to play some day !
How long have you been teaching in Iveagh?
12 years
When you were younger did you go to Iveagh?
No I went to Mullaghglass Primary School.
Do you prefer tea or coffee?
Definitely tea
What is your favourite animal?
An Elephant. I have quite a collection of wooden elephants and pictures at home.
They are a wonderful looking animal.
Who is your favourite singer?
“I find
music
really
Adele and Pixie Lott.
enjoyable.”
Why do you like music so much?
I find music really enjoyable. It’s relaxing to lisways puts a smile on my face when I’m singing or
ten to but it aldancing to it.
Who is your favourite Disney character?
I can’t choose just one! I love all the Disney princesses - their dresses, shoes and tiaras are
fabulous.
French at Iveagh
By Jenna McDowell, Gabriele Lucinskaite & Emilie Moffett
Walk down the corridors of Iveagh and you may be surprised to be greeted with
a ’bonjour’ rather than ’hello’. Mr. Vance encourages everyone from Reception
to Primary 7 to use French daily. This can be in the playground, while lining up
or in the classrooms. Also Mrs. Hutchinson and Mrs. McKinney teach Primary 4
to Primary 7 during the afternoon timetable. Some of the phrases that you may
hear the teachers using are, bonjour, ca va?, il ya du soleil and il ne pleut pas.
The amazing thing is that the children all know what the phrases mean and can
reply in French. They have even been learning French songs and poems! We imagine there will be lots of requests from your children to visit France so that
they can show off their skills.
