Final Exam-2012, Solution

ENGR0135 - Statics and Mechanics of Materials 1
Fall 2012
Final Exam
Answer Five (5) Questions
ENGR 0135 Final Exam (2131)
1. The assembly consists of two red brass
C83400 copper alloy rods AB and CD
of diameter 30 mm, a stainless 304 steel
alloy rod EF of diameter 40 mm, and a
rigid cap G. If the supports at A, C and
F are rigid, determine the average
normal stress developed in rods AB, CD
and EF.
2. Determine the centroid (xc, yc) of the
shaded area.
3. For the pipe assembly, determine the reactions at the fixed support O
4. For the two-member arch, determine
1) Reactions at pin supports A and C ;
2) The shearing stress on a cross section of pin B,
which has a diameter of 25 mm, and is in
single shear.
5. The 20-mm-diameter A-36 steel (G=75 GPa) shaft is subjected to the torques shown.
Determine:
1) The maximum shear stress in the shaft;
2) The angle of twist of the end B with respect to A.
6. The drum has a weight of 100 lb and
rests on the floor for which the
coefficient of static friction is µs=0.5.
If a=3 ft and b=4ft, determine the
smallest magnitude of the force P that
will cause impending motion of the
drum.
