Divray Ha-Rav: The Rabbi’s Words
Rabbi Jay R. Goldstein
It seems to
me that over
the past year,
I have spoken
a great deal
about assessing how we feel about
events in our country and world
by learning and then following
through on our core Jewish values.
If I were asked to identify what is
the most seminal passage in the
Haggadah, the one we should think
and ask questions about each and
every year, my answer would be
the passage “B’chol dor vador…”
“In each generation we are obliged
to attempt to recreate the Exodus
experience, to tell the story to each
individual present and to ourselves
in a meaningful way”
We are asked to see ourselves—
on the most personal level—as
characters in the story of the Jewish
people. By retelling the Passover
story, expounding on it, and
relating it to our own experiences,
the hope is that we will enter into
the story, make it our own, and
join the Jewish people's struggle
for Tikkun Olam, to redeem the
world.
Passover isn’t so much about
history as it is about memory.
Rabbi Jonathan Sacks puts it this
way: "History is his story. Memory
is my story." We don’t really
know definitively much about the
history behind Passover but we
have a story that we tell that has
a powerful effect in shaping how
we see ourselves and how we
understand the world in which
we live.
Hayav Adam lirot et atzmo k'ilu hu
yatza mimitzraim, "Each person is
obligated to see himself/herself
as if he/she personally left Egypt."
We're not supposed to just tell
the story but to experience it and
identify with it personally so that
it becomes part of how we live. It's
no accident that the Torah repeats
thirty-six times that we must be
kind to the stranger in our midst,
The Mourner's Kaddish:
This year especially, our Seder
discussions should come with
an important caveat. It shouldn’t
matter whether you are a democrat
or a republican, a Conservative,
Orthodox, Reform or Unaffiliated
Jew, a believer or non-believer
when you come to the Seder. As
the Seder begins we say, “All who
are hungry come and eat.” We
declare that everyone is welcome
at this table and that there is room
for all types of points of view.
No matter what your discussion
this year, whether political or
personal, take the time to think
about the core Jewish values
we find in the Haggadah, their
meaning in our world today
and what you are going to do to
promote them in your life.
Chag Kasher V’Sameach
FAST OF THE FIRST BORN
Discover the Who, What, When,
Where, How and mostly Why?
Tradition requires that the first born of every
family fasts on the day before Passover. But at the
same time, tradition has also provided a means of
avoiding that necessity.
April 20, 27 & May 4 at 7pm
Most of us know and say the Mourner's Kaddish.
But do we really know its origin, meaning and
history? Through text and discussion, we will
explore why this prayer became so much a part of
our tradition. Join Rabbi Goldstein for this three
week class.
Beth Israel Guide
because "you were strangers in the
land of Egypt." Our story should
affect how we see ourselves and
therefore, the way we treat others.
On Monday, April 10, we invite all first-born males
and females, fathers and mothers, as well as sons
and daughters, to worship with us at the minyan
and to participate in the Siyum followed by the
Seudah (refreshments), which exempt them from
fasting.

The Siyum will be after the service, which will begin
at 7:00 a.m.

WANTED... YOUR HAMETZ
The basic preparation for Pesach involves the removal of
all hametz in our possession. Because of the strictness
of the hametz prohibitions, much thought and effort are
required for the enterprise. Edibles which contain grains
or their derivatives and have been exposed to even the
slightest amount of moisture are hametz and forbidden
on Passover. Wheat, rye, barley, oats, millet, and generally
all grain products, as well as food and liquids made from
them, are subject to the laws of hametz. Most Ashkenazic
authorities have added certain vegetables which look
like grain (kitniot): rice, corn, legumes, beans and peas.
Jewish law ordains that during Passover any trace of
hametz—leaven—may not be in the possession of a Jew.
The Rabbis, therefore, developed a procedure by which
hametz and mixtures of hametz may be sold to a nonJew for the duration of Pesach, and again become the
property of the seller following Pesach.
In most cases, the householder authorizes the Rabbi to
sell the hametz for him/her and to re-purchase it after
the Festival. It is customary to include a donation for
Maot Chittim (a charitable gift for the poor) with
your request. You may contact Rabbi Goldstein or use
the attached coupon.
Because hametz cannot be owned by a Jew on Passover,
tradition provides a procedure called mekhirat hametz,
the selling of hametz. The sale is usually done through
a Rabbi, who acts as an agent for the transaction. NonPassover dishes, pots and hametz should be separated,
put aside and marked to prevent accidental use.
I, _________________________________, residing at __________________________________________________________
do hereby appoint Rabbi Jay R. Goldstein, the Rabbi of Beth Israel Congregation, 3706 Crondall
Lane, Owings Mills, MD 21117, to be my agent for the purpose of selling my hametz. I accept
the definition of hametz as set forth in Jewish law and tradition. This hametz will cease to be
mine after 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 10, 2017 and will not revert to my ownership until
Tuesday, April 18, 8:15 pm, when Pesach ends.

Beyond Beth Israel, in 2013, the Associated and the Jewish
Community Center (JCC) jointly launched a task force
designed to “identify strategies for welcoming, supporting
and engaging interfaith couples and families in Jewish life
and community in Baltimore”. One exciting outcome of
this process was the establishment in September of 2015
of the Interfaith Department of the JCC.
Are you or someone you love involved in an interfaith
relationship? Would you like to learn more about
welcoming resources available in the Baltimore Jewish
community? If so, you are not alone. According to the
2010 Greater Baltimore Jewish Community Study, one
fifth of currently married households in our community
are intermarried and many of these couples experience
hurdles when trying to break into the local Jewish
community. Perhaps as a result, these intermarried
households are less likely than inmarried ones to send
their children to Jewish child care, preschool, day school,
supplemental school or after school programs, join a
synagogue or feel attached to Israel.
Under the capable leadership of Lara Nicolson, Interfaith
Engagement Director, and in partnership with Baltimore
congregations and local Jewish organizations, a variety of
programs have been created to help make our community
more welcoming and inclusive for interfaith families and
couples:
• Love and Religion is a four-session workshop,
facilitated by Beth Land Hecht of Jewish Community
Services, designed to help interfaith couples examine
their hopes and fears about the role that a Jewish
identity will play in their lives.
Here at Beth Israel, we welcome interfaith families and are
committed to ensuring all of our members feel embraced
by our community. We even offer free membership
to any newly married young couple seeking to join our

Happy Spring! By the time you read this,
it will officially be Spring, and Spring
means Passover. Join us for Paint Night on
Wednesday, April 5, 7:30pm and paint
Miriam and Elijah glasses to use at your
Passover seders. You don’t need artistic
talent. An art instructor will be there to help.
Don’t just throw them out. Bring them to the Sisterhood/
Brotherhood Shredding Event on Sunday April 30.
On Sunday, May 7, a week before Mother’s Day, we are
having a Flowering Plant Sale. Just in time for a beautiful
gift for mom or for you to buy plants for your own garden.
Hanging baskets, planters and small individual plants
will be available. So start dreaming of warm weather
and colorful flowers from Sisterhood's plant sale.
Looking back, we hope you enjoyed our Sisterhood
Shabbat. Thanks to the efforts and hard work of Cindy
Bradley, Barbara Freilich, Sandy Kirsh, and Beth Shavitz,
it was a beautiful day.
On Wednesday, May 17, Dr. Dee Dee Shiller, board
certified gynecologist and osteopath, will speak about
breast cancer, including the BRCA II gene. A Baltimore
native of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, she is dedicated to
educating the community about the risks of breast and
ovarian cancer among the Ashkenazic Jewish population.
Nisa Felps, a breast cancer survivor, will share her story
as well. Join us for this empowering meeting at 7:30pm,
following the annual Congregational meeting and a
brief time to enjoy some refreshments. We welcome the
congregation and all guests to join us. Being a Sisterhood
member is not a requirement.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 19.
7:30pm. Safety expert Timothy Von Eiff will speak about
“Safety for You and Your Home”, an important topic for
everyone. In addition to teaching about personal and
home safety, Mr. von Eiff is President of the Defensive
Firearms Consultants, Inc. He has a broad background
in teaching professionals and individuals hand gun
safety, and was an intelligence officer for federal law
enforcement. Come at 7:00 for snacks and schmoozing.
Speaking of safety...do you have old and no longer
needed papers that include sensitive information?
Wishing you a Happy Passover. Enjoy being with your

Beloved mother, Florence Gartner by Diane & Howard
Gartner & Family
In Honor of:
The B’nai Mitzvah of their sons, Dean and Evan Carr by
Sharon & Dr. Eric Carr
The custom of sponsoring a Kiddush is a wonderful way to share
your joy and at the same time support Beth Israel.
You can honor a person, remember a loved one, or celebrate a simcha.
Your sponsorship will appear in the Shabbat Program that week and in
the following month's issue of the Guide.
As a community we delight in each other's simchas, and would be
honored if you share yours with us. Contact Ann Friedman at 410654-0800 x210 or [email protected].
