LUMBERJACKS AGAINST THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE
Stephen F. Austin’s game Saturday against West Alabama will be the 11th game in program history against a current member of
the Gulf South Conference with the ‘Jacks holding a 6-4 overall record. The most frequent opponent SFA has lined up against has
been Delta State with the Lumberjacks posting a 5-2 record against the Statesmen, falling to Delta State 17-14 in 2006 in their most
recent tilt against the Gulf South. SFA is 0-2 all-time against Mississippi College, dropping decisions to the Choctaws in both 1981
and 1983 and is 1-0 against West Alabama, a 49-28 victory in 1993.

LAST TIME OUT: TEXAS TECH 69, SFA 17
Stephen F. Austin’s 90th season of football started out on a sour note as the Lumberjacks fell to Big 12 member Texas Tech 69-17
on Saturday, September 3rd at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock. The ‘Jacks allowed 758 yards of total offense to the Red Raiders
while managing just 370 of their own, including 312 passing yards. WR Justice Liggins had the top performance of the night for the
Lumberjacks, setting a career-high with 10 catches for 80 yards and a touchdown as QB Zach Conque completed 28 of his 49 passes
for 246 yards and a touchdown. The ‘Jacks did manage to put up 17 points against the Red Raiders, the most in program history for
SFA against a Big 12 opponent.
CONQUE CLOSING IN ON 5,000
Senior QB Zach Conque sits on the verge of joining an elite club in the history of Stephen F. Austin. With his 246 passing yards in
the season opener at Texas Tech, Conque upped his career passing total to 4,912 yards, leaving him 88 yards shy of becoming the
eighth 5,000-yard passer in program history. Once he reaches the milestone, he will hold a unique distinction as the only player in
Lumberjack program history to pass for 5,000 yards and rush for 1,000 during his career. In addition to Conque’s standing among
the all-time passing leaders, he also currently ranks fourth all-time in total completions (454), sixth in career total offense (6,073
yards) and tied for eighth in career touchdown passes (32). He also holds the distinction as the top rushing quarterback in program
history, accumulating 1,161 yards on the ground with 24 touchdowns, ranking tied for fourth all-time in program history in career
rushing scores.

LIGGINS SHINES IN LUBBOCK
Senior WR Justice Liggins was one of the ‘Jacks top players in the season opener at Texas Tech, leading the team with 10 catches
for 80 yards and a touchdown. Liggins set new personal-bests in both receptions and yards, besting his previous best of six catches
(at Southeastern Louisiana, 2015) and 74 receiving yards (at Abilene Christian, 2015), hauling in a nine-yard touchdown pass from
Zach Conque in the third quarter for the first touchdown of 2016.
WEST MOVING UP ALL-TIME CHART
Senior RB Joshawa West continues to quietly make his way up the Lumberjack all-time rushing chart, carrying the ball 12 times for
51 yards against Texas Tech Saturday. The Angleton native upped his career rushing total to 1,166 yards, moving into 22nd all-time
in career rushing yards at SFA, while upping his career total offense total to 1,586 yards.
HARRISON INCHING CLOSER
Senior DE Kedrick Harrison continued to add to his reputation as one of the top defensive ends in the conference Saturday, registering a sack against Texas Tech’s Nick Shimoneck. The sack was the 24th tackle for loss of Harrison’s Lumberjack career as he continues
to inch closer to cracking the ‘Jacks’ all-time leaders in the category, sitting two and a half TFLs shy of tying Willie Jefferson (201112) for 10th all-time. The Coldspring native also has 11.5 career sacks, needing three and a half more to join the top-10 as well.
WELCOME TO THE SHOW
When the dust settled in Lubbock Saturday night, 29 Stephen F. Austin players had played in their first game in a Lumberjack uniform. One of the highlights for the newcomers was freshman WR Tamrick Pace, who caught two passes for 48 yards as well as his
first collegiate touchdown, a 38-yard reception from Hunter Taylor. Defensively, freshman CB Zach Hall posted five tackles for the
‘Jacks, including four solo stops, while S Zack Kanipes registered four tackles and his first career sack.

FIRST CAREER STARTS
In addition to the 29 Lumberjacks who saw their first action in
an SFA uniform Saturday, seven logged their first start at the
Division I level as well. Offensively, four players earned the starting nod for the first time, three of which came on the offensive
line in LG A.J. Brown, RG Shane Roberson and RT Devonte Jones,
joined by WR Kiki Hill. Defensively, CB Trent Perriman, FS Ahmad
Muhammad and WS Alize Ward also logged their first SFA starts.
KICKING BRIGHT SPOTS
One of the Achilles heels for SFA in the past few seasons has
been inconsistency in the kicking game, but the unit showed
signs of optimism in Saturday’s season opener. Redshirt freshman Storm Ruiz began his career by hitting a 43-yard field goal
in his first collegiate attempt while also adding a pair of extra
point. Sophomore Caleb Lewallen made his debut as the ‘Jacks’
punter and had a pair of punts 50 yards or longer, including a
63-yarder to set his career high. SFA did miss a 47-yarder against
Texas Tech, a kick by Troy Duran that was partially blocked at the
line of scrimmage.

SFA OFFICIALLY UNVEILS NEW HD VIDEOBOARD
Saturday’s game against West Alabama will not only serve as the 2016 home opener, but also the official debut of the Lumberjacks’
new HD video board in a football capacity. The board, which measures 36’ 10” high by 80’ 8” wide, is the largest in the Southland
Conference and the third-largest at the FCS level, ranking among the top-35 nationally in all of college football. The new board has
already been showcased in a number of events, including the 2016 Carl Kight Track and Field Invitational, the 2016 SFA football
spring game and movie night, featuring Star Wars: Episode VII, as well as showing the 2016 NCAA Division I Bowling Championship,
captured by the Ladyjack bowling team.

LUMBERJACKS ON SEPTEMBER 10th
Saturday’s game against West Alabama will mark the seventh time in program
history the Lumberjacks will suit up on September 10th, although it has been a
date that has not been kind to the ‘Jacks. SFA is 1-5 (.167) on the 10th as five of
those games have been at home - the last of which was a 34-23 loss to Northern
Iowa in 2011 - as the span also includes defeats at the hands of Texas-Arlington
(1960), Cameron (1977), and a pair against Montana State (1994 and 2005). The
Lumberjacks’ lone win on September 10th came at Homer Bryce Stadium in 1988
when SFA defeated Prairie View A&M 38-3
PRESEASON HONORS
Heading into the 2016 season, a handful of Lumberjacks have received preseason honors. QB Zach Conque was named to the CFPA
FCS National Performer of the Year watch list while also being tabbed a first team All-Southland Conference honoree. DE John
Franklin was named a preseason All-American by HERO Sports and joined Conque as a preseason first team All-SLC selection. S
Marlon Walls was named as a nominee for the AFCA Good Works Team, a recognition that combines a player’s performance on the
field and in the classroom as well as his community service efforts.
LOOKING AHEAD
Following Saturday’s non-conference game against West Alabama, Stephen F. Austin will turn its attention to its nine-game Southland Conference schedule, being tested right out of the gate. The Lumberjacks will travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana, to face reigning
conference champion McNeese on Saturday, September 17th, kicking off at 6 p.m. from Cowboy Stadium. The showdown with
McNeese will air on the American Sports Network, the Lumberjacks’ third appearance in the past two seasons on the network.

Third Season at SFA
17th Season Overall
Nicholls State, 1983
Clint Conque is in his third season as the Lumberjacks’ head
coach, setting a precedent for the success of SFA football.
In his first two seasons, Conque has posted a 12-12 record at
the helm of the Lumberjacks, including a 9-8 record in Southland
Conference play. Those wins have included three victories over
nationally-ranked programs, including a 28-27 win at 21st-ranked
Southeastern Louisiana in 2015.
Also during his first two years, Conque has mentored five AllSLC players, including second team defensive end John Franklin in
2015. In addition, offensive linemen Terran Vaughn and Byron Williams both signed free agent contracts with the Oakland Raiders
following the season.
In his first season in Nacogdoches, Conque led SFA to an 8-5
record, a five-win improvement from 2013, as the 2014 squad became just the 13th team in program history to reach the eight-win
plateau. Picked to finish sixth in the preseason Southland Conference standings, SFA went 5-3 in SLC play, including wins at sixthranked McNeese State and against eighth-ranked Southeastern
Louisiana, tying for third in the conference standings and earning a
bid to the 2014 NCAA FCS playoffs.
SFA cracked the FCS Coaches Poll Top-25 twice in 2014, marking the first time the Lumberjacks had been ranked in the nation’s
top-25 since 2010. Conque helped guide the ‘Jacks to their first
NCAA playoff appearance since 2010, earning SLC Coach of the Year
honors for the third time in his career and was a finalist for the FCS
Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year for the fourth time.
Under Conque’s guidance, senior running back Gus Johnson
had the best rushing season in program history, setting six SFA
rushing records as well as setting the Southland Conference record
for rushing yards in a season. Johnson was named the SLC Player of
the Year and was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award (finishing
ninth in the voting) while sophomore quarterback Zach Conque
was named the SLC Newcomer of the Year.
Conque brought to Nacogdoches an impressive coaching resume built on success, posting an overall career record of 105-59
(.640) during his 14 seasons as the head coach at Central Arkansas.
He remains the all-time winningest coach in Bear program history
while becoming just the second collegiate head coach in the state
of Arkansas to amass 100 career victories, sitting behind only legendary Razorback coach Frank Broyles.
Central Arkansas established itself as one of the top teams
both regionally and nationally during Conque’s tenure, capturing
the Southland Conference title in 2008 and 2012, advancing to the
FCS playoffs in both 2011 and 2012. UCA also made a pair of NCAA
Division II playoff appearances during Conque’s time in Conway, including advancing to the quarterfinals in 2005, before the program
made the transition to the FCS level following the 2005 season.
During the eight seasons in which Central Arkansas competed
in the Southland Conference, Conque has posted a 33-16 record in
SLC play (.673), being named the Southland’s Coach of the Year in
2008 and 2012 in addition to the same honor in 2005. The NCAA
FCS Region 5 Coach of the Year in 2008, Conque has also been a
three-time finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award
with his teams boasting seven top-25 finishes since 2001.
Under Conque’s tutelage, his players have been recognized for
their efforts on the field time and time again. During his coaching
career, 127 players have been recognized as all-conference selections with 37 earning All-America honors as 32 former players have
gone on to play professionally, including 14 signing NFL contracts
with an additional six in the CFL.
Conque’s UCA teams won eight or more games in eight of his
14 seasons in Conway, including an 11-3 mark in 2005 that tied the
program record for wins in a season as the Bears advanced to the
Division II national quarterfinals. Central Arkansas reached the 10win plateau again in 2008 as the Bears posted a 10-2 mark. Known
for his high-tempo offenses, Conque’s teams consistently ranked
among the national leaders in both scoring and passing offense as
the Bears have finished in the top-10 nationally in passing offense
five times and scoring offense four times.
His focus hasn’t been solely on the field, however, as Conque’s
teams have boasted some of the highest APR (Academic Progress
Rate) scores in the region with three Academic All-Americans during his coaching career.
Before taking over the helm of the Central Arkansas program
in 2000, Conque spent seven seasons at Louisiana Tech (1993-99)
in a variety of roles. Conque oversaw the Bulldogs’ running backs,
receivers and special teams before ultimately serving as the offensive coordinator in 1999 as Louisiana Tech led the nation passing
offense and was second in total offense en route to an 8-3 record.
Prior to his time in Ruston, three seasons at Samford University
(1990-92) as the running backs coach, helping guide the Bulldogs
to back-to-back NCAA Division I-AA playoff appearances in 1991
and 1992, posting a 22-4 record during that span. Conque began
his collegiate coaching career at McNeese State (1987-89), spending three seasons coaching the Cowboys’ running backs and outside linebackers.
A graduate of Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, La.,
Conque was an All-American linebacker at Nicholls State University
in Thibodaux, La., picking up first team honors by the Associated
Press. He also was named a second team LSWA All-Louisiana selection as a senior as Conque was selected to Nicholls’ Silver Anniversary Team in 1997 and in 2005 was inducted into the school’s Hall
of Fame.
Following his playing career at Nicholls, Conque landed with the
Los Angeles Raiders only to have his career cut short by injury in
1983. He then returned to Nicholls and began his coaching career
as a graduate assistant for the Colonels before spending a pair of
seasons coaching in the high school ranks.
Conque is married to the former Angele’ Jackson and the couple
has three sons: Chasse, the Director of Athletics at Arkansas-Little
Rock; Benton, a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army currently stationed
in South Korea; and Zach, the Lumberjacks’ starting quarterback.
Conque is the grandfather of three girls as Juliana and Sydney were
born to Chasse and wife, Lisa, in 2012, followed by the addition of
Adeline in 2014.
