Dear Parishioners and Visitors,
October is by tradition "the Month of the Rosary", ( this past
Friday was the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary) and this year
the Australian Bishops are urging us to pray - especially the
Rosary - for marriage. I would like to encourage you to do
so, and can mention that we have Rosary and benediction of
the Blessed Sacrament as part of our Holy Hour in the
cathedral every Friday at Noon in the Lady Chapel. There is a group who pray the
Rosary on Saturday mornings after Mass, too.
If you prefer to pray the rosary individually in the cathedral, you can use the
stained glass windows to help you in your mediation on each of the traditional
fifteen Mysteries. The Joyful Mysteries begin near St Joseph's altar, which is at the
front end of the left-hand aisle; the Sorrowful Mysteries begin near the Hyde Park
doors; the Glorious Mysteries begin near the Irish Saints altar, concluding with the
Great North Window.
The Rosary should have a special place in the spiritual life of all Australian
Catholics - it is the way the Faith was kept alive here in the early, priest-less, Massless years and in the remote country districts where the sacraments were rarely
available. I know that the Rosary kept my prayer life going as a young man, and I
cannot stress enough what a great gift the Rosary has been in good times and in
bad. It is a window into the life of Christ. It is not an old lady thing! "Real men
pray the Rosary."
Fr Don Richardson, Dean.

Gospel
Lk 17:11-19
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke
It seems that no one has returned to give thanks to God except this foreigner.
On the way to Jerusalem Jesus travelled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he
entered one of the villages, ten lepers came to meet him. They stood some way off and called
to him, ‘Jesus! Master! Take pity on us.’ When he saw them he said, ‘Go and show yourselves
to the priests.’ Now as they were going away they were cleansed. Finding himself cured, one
of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice and threw himself at the feet of Jesus
and thanked him. The man was a Samaritan. This made Jesus say, ‘Were not all ten made
clean? The other nine, where are they? It seems that no one has come back to give praise to
God, except this foreigner.’ And he said to the man, ‘Stand up and go on your way. Your faith
has saved you.’
