This Week’s News The Cedric Sharpley Drumming Bursary Ex Ashlyns student, Cedric Sharpley , sadly died in March 2012 aged only 60 years old. Cedric was a successful professional drummer and songwriter being perhaps best known for playing with Gary Numan and Tubeway Army in the late 1970’s and early 80’s. His partner, Gill, has liaised with Ashlyns School to set up a drumming bursary in Cedric’s name. The bursary will pay for a student to have an individual 30 minute drumming lesson each week for a year. If you feel that your child would benefit from such a bursary, please apply in writing to Mrs Caroline Bailey, School Manager, by the end of June 2015. Please set out why you think your child should be considered for this. The successful applicant will be notified by the end of the summer term. Girls Rugby in Pre-Season Training In more favourable weather conditions, the Ashlyns Girls Rugby Team continues to grow with many new recruits as they prepare for September. Their enthusiasm is infectious and we look forward to a successful season! Ashlyns Samba Drummers will open the Petertide Fair this Saturday. Fairgoers can also enjoy Ashlyns School Orchestra’s performance at 1pm. The Fair (now in its 34th year) offers a family day of games, stalls, BBQ, ale and Pimms in aid of the church and the Swan Youth Centre. Please come along to support the fair (10.30 to 3 pm) and our performers. Further details attached. Ashlyns and Britain’s First Children’s Charity This year Coram celebrates the 275th anniversary of the creation of the Foundling Hospital; an institution which saved tens of thousands of children’s lives. The original Foundling Hospital in London was built in 1740 following Thomas Coram’s charter to save abandoned infants in the city. In 1926 a new Foundling Hospital was built on the Ashlyns site, closely modelled on the original Georgian building (a chapel flanked by two wings). The school was home to hundreds of children until 1954 when our building became a secondary school. For more information about Coram and Ashlyns’ heritage, please visit www.coram.org.uk/about-us/our-heritagefoundling-hospital or catch up on Radio 4’s recent programme: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05wnb7g The original Foundling Hospital in London The building we know today, opened to foundlings in 1935 Well done to Y10 who finished all of their Science examinations this week. Results will be out on GCSE results day in August. Look out for further information regarding how these can be obtained.
