Volume 3, Issue 4 Fall, 2012 Greetings! It's hard to believe Safe Voices, formerly AWAP, is celebrating 35 years of service to those affected by domestic violence in Androscoggin, Franklin, and Oxford counties. Our agency was started by dedicated women who wanted to make a difference to those in need. While domestic violence is still very much a prominent issue much progress has been made since 1977, when the agency was founded. We continue with our mission to support and empower those affected by domestic violence, engage the communities in creating social change, and educating our young people with the hope that someday domestic violence is eradicated. This is our first e-newsletter, dedicated to Domestic Violence Awareness Month which occurs every October. Please take a few moments to read the articles contained in this newsletter and we hope you will participate in some of the activities going on in your community. ~Jane Executive Director Domestic Violence Awareness Month The evolution of Domestic Violence Awareness Month started in 1981 with the Day of Unity and came into fruition in 1987 with the whole month of Auburn City Hall illuminated in October dedicated to domestic purple lights. violence issues. There will be purple lights and awareness displays throughout each location, and several community members and law enforcement officers will be participating and speaking at these events, as well as staff from Safe Voices. This year, to raise awareness of domestic violence, Safe Voices is asking supporters to adorn their home or business with a purple light for the month of October. It is often hard to see domestic violence in your community, thus making it easy to forget that one in three women and one in nine men will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime. These people are your sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, daughters, sons and friends. All too often victims of domestic abuse do not feel supported from the community; they feel they are alone in their struggle. So this October show your neighbors that you support the victims of domestic abuse and participate in our Paint the County Purple Campaign.
