SPECIAL 75TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION RE-RELEASE!

This edition features a new engraving with historical information supplied by Carl Schmidt.
Perhaps the most often performed American choral work. The millions of copies sold since its
composition in 1940 for the opening exercises of Tanglewood (the summer home of the Boston
Symphony) attest to its endurance. Complete text: “Alleluia. Amen.”

A Sacred Place
Three Sacred Songs
Gwyneth Walker
Derek Healey
SATB and Organ or opt. String Orchestra
These are three reflections (Welcome to the House of the Lord; In This Still
Room; Alleluia! Amen!) which celebrate “the place”—the church—as a
house, as a room, where the spirit rejoices in faith.
These songs are dedicated to author William Osborne as a way of saying,
“thank you” for the help and encouragement he has given the composer
over the past few years. These sacred songs were conceived as being performed either as a set or individually. The accompanying flute provides introductions, interludes, and codas throughout the set and, on a few occasions,
plays with the voices. The piano part is ad lib.

1. Welcome to the House of the Lord
Welcome to the House of the Lord starts with the
outer elements, coming into the church. Welcome
light, welcome beauty, welcome wonder. The
focus then turns inward, to the personal gifts of
healing and comfort. And, as we welcome the
many aspects of faith, we realize that, one blessing at a time, we are welcoming God!

In This Still Room is a musical setting of the poem
by Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier (1807–
1892). Although these lyrics are inspired by the
Quaker Meetinghouse, the “still room” may also
refer to the moments of silent prayer and meditation within any worship service. “I find it well to
come for deeper rest to this still room.”

In The Shepherd Lad, the Spanish mystic Saint
John of the Cross describes a shepherd lad’s

how another (the Devil) tempted his love away.

threw wide his arms in sweetest charity, since by

This carol concerns the birth of Jesus Christ, and is
told from the perspective of shepherds playing simple instruments—flutes and drums—the onomatopoetic sound of which gives the song its name. “Pat-apan” is meant to mimic the sound of the drum, and an
accompanying lyric, “tu-re-lu-re-lu,” the flute.

How Can I Keep From Singing?
Stephen Caracciolo
TR AC K 4
TTBB Chorus (divisi) a cappella O magnum mysterium
Commissioned by Cantus in 2014 for their album A
Harvest Home and subsequent tours through Northern Europe, the Baltic States, and United States. Written as a companion piece to Caracciolo’s setting of
Simple Gifts (also commissioned by Cantus four years
earlier), it was his desire to sketch an arrangement of
this iconic folk hymn that sounded traditionally American, immediately recognizable, and not overly arranged. This work offers a
fresh, musical experience using the sonorous sounds of men’s voices.

Commissioned by the Bach Society of Dayton, Ohio,
this beautiful setting is for SATB, (until the last chord
when an optional divisi is indicated). Written in a
contemporary tonal language, mild dissonances are
rich rather than jarring. While suitable for advanced
ensembles, this is a useful and manageable piece for
any sized group comfortable with a cappella singing.

Come and Go with Me to That Land
Gwyneth Walker
A traditional gospel song, speaking of the “promised land” (heaven) where we are bound. This new
arrangement focuses on several, specific aspects of
the lyrics, and of the “journey.” Envisioning that one
is walking to that land, the piano introduction, in a
swing rhythm, is marked at a strolling tempo. When
the chorus enters, there is a bounce to their step, as
the staccato dots emphasize the words, “Come and
go with me to that land.”

No la debemos dormir (No, we must not sleep)

SATB and Piano
At Christmas, we joyfully celebrate a new birth, the
birth of a king. But imagine yourself in the position
of young Mary, far from home and nervous about
giving birth to her first child. Might you be a little
afraid? Although she is alone in her thoughts, she
is surrounded by those who will support her. Who
might speak these words? Joseph? The animals?
The shepherds? The angels? Here is an intimate
poem for Christmas Eve, when all is quiet save for
Mary’s labored breaths. Here is a lullaby to sooth her worries, and to calm all
Christians as they await, as Mary did, the birth of Jesus Christ. Text in Spanish

This is the familiar text, “What star is this which
beams so bright, more lovely than the noonday

sublime. An introspective chant melody weaves
its way through the text as the English horn (the
sole accompaniment) dialogues, foreshadows, and
comments. Starting with unison, then two part,
and then a rich TTBB texture, the vocal writing is
stunning and not difficult.

The biblical text speaks of accepting the range of life
experiences—from prosperity to adversity, from joy
to sorrow. In this new interpretation, the lyrics are
expanded into personal relevance: “In my life, there is
a season. In my life, there is a purpose.” And furthermore, “For I believe, in my life, there is a time of hope
that we can live together in peace.” The message is
that one’s life has a purpose, and hope can provide

“At Last” from The Space Between
Scott Gendel
High Voice, Violoncello and Piano

“My song
cycle The Space
Between is enormous in scope,
full of oversized
emotions, huge
philosophical
inquiries, and
big dramatic
gestures. After
all this tumult,
the ethereal At
Last feels not
only like a lovely
way to end the
cycle, but like a
necessity, as if the audience needs this song in order
to move on. Like all my favorite poetry, Wendell Berry’s text is something I can immediately understand,
but that I know I can never understand fully. It very
gently helps the listener to ‘pass through into the
land of the wholly loved,’ but does so in a way that is
beautifully ambiguous, full of mystery and potential
meanings. This potential of At Last to express so many
different things has proven to be one of its biggest
strengths. In 2012, the NYC-based arts non-profit
Sing for Hope incorporated it as the final song for the
AIDS Quilt Songbook @20, a concert celebrating the
20th anniversary of the classical music world’s first
organized response to the AIDS crisis. In the context
of HIV/AIDS, At Last has become a beautifully gentle
way of helping people to move on, both those who
have lost loved ones, and in some way, those who
have died as well. Berry’s words resonate so strongly
in conjunction with the AIDS epidemic, and I have
come to see At Last as almost being destined to
be heard in this light, where it seems to have such
power and meaning. In the original song, the voice
plays against the piano’s counter-melody as if there
were two voices singing together. The added cello
line brings this to the forefront in this arrangement,
re-contextualizing the song as a duet between one
voice with the power of language, and another, wordless, other-worldly voice. This makes it a particularly
powerful duet in the context of the AIDS epidemic,
where there are so many lost voices. I am so humbled
by the incredible work Sing for Hope does in mobilizing artists to benefit communities in need, and so
pleased that At Last has become a part of that work.
And I am truly excited to see what other new lives
it will take on, and how its context will continue to
evolve.” —Scott Gendel

From Dusk to Dawn tells the story of the Liberian
women protesting the civil war which engulfed their
country until 2003. Led by Leymah Gbowee (winner
of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize), the women prayed,
marched, sang and resolutely waited for peace. At
times, the women doubted their strength. But, with
hands joined together, they became peace mothers.
Ultimately, they proclaimed, “Mighty be our powers!” The musical language
for this choral setting is rhythmic, energetic and powerful. The voices
sing, “Gather, gather,” in repeated 8th notes, as the calls for protest gain in
strength. Tremolo chords in the accompaniment bring increased energy. The
final section is emphatic, with accented chords in the voices and piano to
express “Mighty women!”

SATB, Handbells, and Strings

“A la crèche!” was the cry
of the peasants and townspeople in sixteenth-century France as they prepared
to celebrate Christmas. The
young people celebrated
with dancing. At first,
popular tunes were piped for the dances. Over the years,
the words to the popular tunes were replaced with more
sacred words which told the story of Christmas, creating
new carols with old folk tunes. At the Christmas feasts,
the new carols were used for ring dancing. Total performance time: 14:00. Full score and string parts on rental.

tender, slumber song. “The First Noël” is a moderately
paced arrangement of this well-known carol. “Wassail” is
