Campus Life Services Staff Essentials Handbook

employee essentials
What Brings Us Together
Campus Life Services exists for one simple reason: to make life
better here at UCSF.
We make life better here when we provide excellent service,
quality programs, convenience, and competitive pricing.
A place to live, a spot to hear music, room to dance, a ride to
work, or a pot of hot coffee served first thing in the morning.
These are just a few of the hundreds of ways we enrich the daily
lives of everyone who comes to work, visit, or study at UCSF.
Through our many services and business lines, we help build a
community that makes UCSF the institution of choice for
discovery, working, and learning.
Making Life Better Here is why we exist, and what you are here
to help us achieve.
1
People make the difference
To help Make Life Better Here, we depend on the creativity and
dedicated efforts of our most valuable and valued asset:
our staff.
• Mission Bay Community Center featuring a world-class
conference center, food court, retail space, and professional
meeting services support.
Currently, we employ over 500 full- and part-time employees at
all levels, from entry-level to management positions.
• Mission Bay Housing Complex with 430 apartments for
individual students and students and post-docs with families, with
shopping and retail services.
You are here—like everyone at UCSF—to support UCSF’s
mission to advance education, patient care, and research in
health and medical sciences.
• Two Mission Bay parking garages.
• Mission Bay Child Care Center for 75 children.
Together, our contributions go a long way in helping things run
smoothly for the people who work, learn, heal, or visit here. Our
parent organization, Financial and Administrative Services (FAS),
provides critical business support such as information technology (IT), resource and planning, and financial and administrative
management—systems no organization as large as UCSF can
do without.
As you browse this manual, you will find information to help you
get acquainted with our organization, culture, and services.
You are now a member of a dedicated and talented group of
individuals committed to Making Life Better Here at UCSF.
Welcome!
As a component of FAS, Campus Life Services focuses on delivering a variety of life enriching services and programs such as
the ones you’ll learn about in this handbook.
It’s a great time to be here because of the planned growth at
UCSF. As UCSF grows, so will Campus Life Services.
Throughout 2005-2006, we will see the opening of these new

As an acronym, it defines how we treat each other, our
customers, and how we manage our businesses. In action it
serves as proof that our values and standards are truly the
stars that guide us. That’s why we take the time to clarify and
reward the kind of care that’s expected from everyone in the

is that a F.A.Q.?
We’re here to make your life better with a few
answers to frequently asked questions. If you don’t
see what you’re looking for here, let us know and
we’ll point you in the right direction.
Who is CLS? Who is FAS?
Acronyms. Can’t live with ’em, can’t live without ’em. While we
prefer to be referenced as Campus Life Services, it’s a UCSF
habit to shorten names to letters. As for FAS, it’s short for
Finance and Administrative Services. Campus Life Services is
one of the departments under FAS.
What’s a Bear Hug?
A) Inappropriate affection from a Kodiak, or B) a gracious way
of saying thank you to a friend or expressing appreciation to
staff? The answer is B! Bear Hugs are gift certificates for all kinds
of goodies and are sold by Arts & Events. Bear Hugs
come in the form of movie tickets, gift certificates for shopping,
dining, and much more.
Where can I catch a shuttle?
Lots of places. You can catch a shuttle to major UCSF
campuses in San Francisco as well as some secondary
locations. Shuttles operate Monday-Friday, 7am-8pm, except
holidays. The ride is free for all UCSF staff. For complete transit
maps and schedules, visit: www.campuslifeservices.ucsf.edu/
transportation/shuttles/
What does the Campus Life Team do for me?
The Campus Life Team organizes and hosts various CLS
community-building events and activities throughout the year
to celebrate you and your contributions to CLS. The Campus
Life Team makes sure that we remember to regularly thank the
people who make our success possible.
How big is UCSF? How big is the CLS family?
Of the ten UC campuses, UCSF is the smallest. We make up for
size in stature with three Nobel laureates, more than 750 issued
foreign patents, and the potential to become the biotechnology
capital of the world. Currently, the 12 San Francisco sites serve
2,800 students, over 18,000 full time faculty and staff, 800 postdocs, and 1,325 residents. Of this population, approximately 500
are Campus Life Services staff. For more facts and figures on
UCSF, go to: www.ucsf.edu/about_ucsf/profile.html.
Where can I go to relax?
Even though UCSF is an urban campus, you can still find open
spaces at many of our campus sites in which to unwind, such
as Saunders Court at Parnassus, the outdoor terrace at Laurel
Heights, or the designated lounge area of your building. As a CLS
staff member, you are also eligible for immediate membership at
the Fitness & Recreation Center, no waiting.
Feeling hungry?
From soups to nuts, the vendor management arm of Retail
Services sees to your dining needs. Enjoy a flavorful menu of
choices at the various food providers located at Mt. Zion,
Genentech Hall at Mission Bay, Millberry Union and Saunders
Court at Parnassus, and Mission Center Building (MCB). In
addition, you can load up on quick snacks at the University Express
stores at Millberry Union and Genentech Hall at Mission Bay.
